Senior Taxation Specialist
The Senior Taxation Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with the US Qualified intermediary (QI) agreement and the Canadian Income Tax requirements for the Foreign Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and Common Reporting Standards (CRS). As a key member of the GRS Tax team, this role contributes to meeting the income tax compliance and reporting obligations of Sun Life’s Group Retirement Service (GRS) block of business.
The Senior Tax Specialist will report to the Director, GRS Taxation.
- Prepare all reporting for the QI including 1042 and 945 returns and 1042S, 1099
DIV and 1099B slips. - Review all US withholding tax forms (W8/W9) to determine validity of forms.
- Ensure tax withholding to the IRS is appropriate.
- Manage the Periodic QI Review including collecting the required documentation, providing it to the external reviewer and responding to any queries.
- Prepare annual 1042 reconciliation.
- Prepare reconciliation of tax reported as withheld on 1042/1099 tax slips vs tax paid by Sun Life and/or other withholding agent.
- Prepare reporting to the CRA for FATCA and CRS.
- Review all regulatory changes impacting QI/FATCA/CRS, and ensure changes are implemented.
- Review and update QI, FATCA and CRS manuals.
- Provide guidance to operational teams.
- At least 5 years of experience in QI/FATCA/CRS tax reporting.
- University Degree in Business, Economics discipline with a specialization in accounting.
- Proficiency in Excel.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- CPA designation.
- Experience with GRS products is an asset.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks to meet tight deadlines.
- Vacation not permitted from January‑March each year.
- Overtime may be required from January‑March each year.

Base Pay range: 90,000 – 140,000.
