Join a global team dedicated to sustainability and green tech, where energy is good for the planet and your soul Embrace flat hierarchies and an open, agile culture that fosters innovation, flexibility, and creativity. At Octopus, great people get stuff done, all whilst being themselves.

About the role We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Indirect Tax Manager to be responsible for all aspects of Indirect Tax (VAT/GST/Sales Tax) compliance and advisory across the Octopus Energy Group. This newly created role will be crucial in managing risk and ensuring efficiency in our rapidly growing international operations. You will report into the Group Head of Tax and be part of the Group tax team.

You will have one direct report- the tax assistant manager. The tax team looks after all taxes across the group and while the role is focussed on indirect tax there will be opportunities for exposure to other taxes. The group is highly acquisitive so there is huge potential for the role to develop in the very near future.

What you'll do...

Advisory and Planning
  • Provide expert indirect tax advice and support to various business units (e.g.,
Finance, Legal, Operations, and Technology) on new products, services, and
    expansion into new markets.
  • Identify opportunities for indirect tax savings and efficiencies.
  • Lead indirect tax due diligence for M&A activities.
  • Assist in setting up the correct indirect tax processes for new international entities.
Compliance and Reporting
  • Manage all VAT compliance obligations for the UK entities, including overseeing
the timely and accurate preparation and submission of returns. The returns will be
prepared by the tax assistant manager.
  • Provide support where necessary to the non-UK entities.
  • Ensure the Group's accounting systems and processes correctly capture and
    report indirect tax data.
  • Coordinate with external advisors and internal finance teams to gather necessary
    data for tax filings.
  • Monitor changes in indirect tax legislation across relevant jurisdictions and
implement necessary changes to internal processes and systems.
  • Advise on other indirect taxes as required eg customs duty and climate change
    levy.
  • Identify efficiencies and improve processes and systems to ensure we are keeping
    up with requirements.

What you'll need...

  • A recognised professional accounting or tax qualification (e.g. CTA, ACA, ACCA, CPA or LLM in Taxation).
  • Strong post qualification experience in indirect tax, ideally gained in-house within a multinational business or at a major accounting firm.
  • Proven technical knowledge of VAT/GST/Sales Tax regimes, particularly across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience working within the energy or utilities sector would be a bonus.
  • Experience with Net Suite and/or tax automation tools would be helpful.
  • Great written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax topics clearly and confidently to people outside of tax.
  • Comfortable working autonomously, managing multiple priorities and taking ownership of projects through to completion.
