Cyber Security Officer ( Apprentice)

Contract:

I nitially a Fixed term contract for 24 months to cover the lifetime of the apprenticeship. On successfully passing your apprenticeship qualification, we are committed to offering a suitable permanent position.

Working hours:

35 hours per week is full time. As an apprentice you will be spending 20% of your time on off-the job learning, which includes attending lectures/tutorials with your training provider.

About Us:

The Financial Ombudsman Service is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that plays a vital role in UK financial services. Every day we help resolve disputes between consumers, or small businesses, and their financial service providers.

A Cyber Security Officer provides our team with the essential, dedicated operational capacity needed to manage day-to-day business-as-usual (BAU) security workloads without compromising our security posture. By assigning routine tasks like vulnerability scanning, initial allocated ticket triage to this role, we immediately prevent resource fatigue and eliminate critical backlogs that leave the organization exposed to unpatched risks.

What You’ll Do:

Investigations:
Help senior cybersecurity analysts dive deep into live investigations, conducting root-cause analysis on complex security incidents.

Vulnerability Monitoring:
Help deploy and manage security tools across corporate environments to conduct regular risk assessments and vulnerability scans.

Alert & Ticket Management:
Act as a first responder to escalated security tickets, reviewing automated logs and system activities within our monitoring tools.

Continuous Improvement:
Help maintain and update security documentation, playbooks, and standard operating procedures for Security processes and BAU tasks

Security Awareness:
Help execute broader security awareness programs, phishing simulations, and training updates for employees across the business units

Technology Evaluation:
Research and evaluate emerging security technologies and open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools to continuously improve our defensive stack.

Threat Horizons:
Keep actively abreast of the latest cybersecurity news, emerging global threats, and zero-day vulnerabilities to proactively adjust our internal defences.

To be considered for this role, you’ll need to show us that you’ve got the skills and capabilities. You’ll have to meet the following minimum criteria:

Minimum Criteria
64 UCAS points from any combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications, including Maths.

On enrolment onto the apprenticeship (September 2026) you will be at least 18 years of age, not be in full-time education or receiving funding for other learning programmes.

You will need a full UK Right to Work for the duration of the apprenticeship, and have valid and eligible residency status and be a resident in the UK for 3 years before the start of the apprenticeship

In addition your CV will show us:

Ideally an understanding of fundamental networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS), operating systems, cloud environments, and modern vector landscapes

Problem solving and natural investigative skill-set – situations you’ve been in that help to showcase these skills.
