Overview of Role

Ensure that the depot’s electrical and mechanical plant and equipment is always available for use by the depots when required to support the provision of the required trains for service, by carrying out preventative maintenance, casualty repairs and modifications, employing a range of skills and techniques including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, woodworking, and hydraulics.

Key Accountabilities
  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate licenses/certificates for the role.
  • Checking and monitoring own work by ensuring they keep up-to-date with all service bulletins, new procedures and that quality systems are adhered to at all times.
  • Perform statutory and preventative maintenance on relevant plant and equipment, and contribute to the design and installation of new static plant and equipment in accordance with design specifications.
  • Repair, recondition and service all types of static or mobile plant and equipment within the workshops, depots, or outlying sites.
  • Surveillance of nominated plant items and equipment and provision of detailed records and reports of findings, in accordance with statutory requirements.
  • Assist in fault finding on electrical and/or mechanical equipment and the interpretation of technical documentation for the beneficial use in all depot projects.

Knowledge – Essential
  • Knowledge of plant maintenance and equipment within a depot such as lifting equipment, train washes, shutter doors, 415 v, 240 v and 110 v electrical equipment and installation, pneumatic equipment, and on‑board diagnostic tools an advantage.
  • Successfully completed a registered apprenticeship including all knowledge and performance assessments, to Level 3 NVQ standard in an electrical or mechanical discipline – Electrical NVQ assessment must be either in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Installation Buildings & Structures), the Level 3 NVQ diploma in Installing Electrotechnical systems and equipment (buildings, structures and the environment) or the Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification (Installation) Apprenticeship Standard (C&G 236 Parts 1& 2 or approved equivalent), plus the industry assessment of occupational competence (the AM2) OR have completed the JIB Mature Candidate Assessment including the AM2.

Both the Level 3 Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations and the Level 3 Award in the Periodic, Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations (C&G 2391 or equivalent) and BS 7671 18th Edition Regulations (or equivalent). In principle, must meet the JIB requirements for Electrician and Approved Electrician.

Experience – Essential
  • Must have experience in plant maintenance and equipment or installation or a time served apprenticeship environment.
  • Must be able to carry out electrical installation work efficiently and in accordance with the National Working Rules for the Electrical Contracting Industry, the current IET Wiring Regulations for the Requirements of Electrical Installations BS7671, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and the Construction Industry Scheme Regulations.
  • Must have had two years’ experience working as an Electrician subsequent to the satisfactory completion of training and immediately prior to the application for this grade.
  • A proven track record of fault finding and problem solving.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read and translate schematic and technical drawings.
  • Current IET regulations for Electrical Engineers.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of IT equipment and portable devices.
Experience – Desirable
  • Testing & Inspection certification.
  • Experience in a facilities environment.
