The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $120,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position InformationThe California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Assistant Director, Executive Writing to serve as a skilled and experienced writer who assists in developing communications strategy and independently manages executive writing projects, researching and preparing communications materials for CSU senior executives including, but not limited to, the chancellor and the chair of the CSU Board of Trustees.
Such projects include speeches, talking points, video scripts, social media, op-eds, articles, correspondence, memos, presentations, reports and briefings, among others.
The Assistant Director, Executive Writing ensures quality, accuracy and consistency of message in high-level internal and external communications. This is an essential quality-control function that protects the public image of the California State University.
Responsibilities- Under the general direction of the Senior Director, Executive Writing and Speechwriter, the Assistant Director, Executive Writing produces communications materials to achieve the goals and policy directives of the Chancellor and other senior leadership.
- Projects may include speeches of varying lengths, correspondence, articles, op-eds, social media memos, video scripts, presentations, briefings, reports and talking points, among others.
- Developing communications strategies and maintaining necessary processes and procedures for the effective execution of the above.
- Ensuring accuracy of fact, appropriateness of tone and consistency of message in high-level internal and external communications.
- May work directly and often independently with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellors and members of the CSU Board of Trustees.
- Participation in confidential leadership discussions and access to confidential information.
- A significant responsibility is to prepare and review materials for the Board of Trustees.
- A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, public relations, public policy, political science or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least five years of demonstrated professional executive writing experience, preferably supporting an executive leader in an academic/higher education or public policy environment.
- Experience writing and editing according to the Associate Press Stylebook or an AP-based style guide.
- Ability to function effectively at the executive level in a large and complex organization and to contribute to the overall management of such an organization.
- Experience producing high-quality documents with Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Knowledge of best practices related to the development and implementation of public relations/public affairs strategy.
- Ability to exercise a high degree of independence, judgment and discretion.
