Position: ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN - (NON-CAREER) - CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Position Overview

THE PORT OF LONG BEACH IS SEEKING TWO (2) ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNS IN THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT DIVISION.

About the Construction Management Division

The Construction Management Division is responsible for managing construction and professional services contracts awarded by the Board of Harbor Commissioners and for managing the Port’s Labor Compliance Program.

The Role

Under general supervision, the Construction Management Intern performs routine engineering work and contributes in technical and interpersonal capacities.

Responsibilities
  • Collect, compile and analyze statistical and technical data related to Construction Management activities.
  • Assist in minor construction inspection.
  • Work closely with the project team monitoring the quality, cost and scheduling of construction projects.
  • Prepare cost estimates from engineering plans for infrastructure improvements.
  • Review and process Requests for Information, submittals, and other construction contract documentation.
  • Review contractor’s monthly progress payment requests.
  • Review contractor’s change order cost and schedule impact.
  • Assist with preparation of change order packages.
  • Provide technical assistance to Engineering staff.
  • Keep supervisor informed regularly on status of work activities and issues.
  • Interact closely with the Construction Management Division and with other divisions as required.
  • Assist with developing the project schedule, reviewing the schedule, and updating the schedule.
  • Assist with reviewing and tracking RFIs and submittals.
  • Prepare and track punchlist progress.
  • Assist with closeout documentation.
  • Attend weekly project meetings and design review meetings.
  • Review contractors’ as-built drawings.
  • Other related duties as required.
Interpersonal Responsibilities
  • Correspond and communicate with internal Port employees and consultants via email, phone and live meetings.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with internal Port divisions, contractors and consultants.
  • Attend weekly project meetings and design review meetings.
  • Perform site visits, take photographs, and note key elements of work taking place.
Required Experience and Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program with a focus/emphasis in Civil Engineering, Construction Management and/or related field, in junior or senior standing, or enrolled in a graduate level Civil Engineering or Construction Management program.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is required.
  • Be familiar with MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other related applications.
  • Knowledge of Bluebeam software is desired.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as the ability to work independently.
  • Possess good oral and written skills, and an ability to effectively communicate ideas in a clear, concise, and professional manner.
Work Hours and Duration

This is an unclassified, non-career (“at-will”) position. Interns typically work 20 hours per week, up to an average of 29 hours per week over the year, totaling up to 1600 hours for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time but will not extend beyond two years.
