Basic Assignment:

Under the supervision of the Association Executive Director or Senior Program Director, the YMCA of Greater Long Beach (Fairfield & Los Altos Y Branches) are currently hiring full time Program Leader positions for a new collaboration with Long Beach Unified School District to work in the TK (Transitional Kindergarten) classrooms at select LBUSD elementary schools in support of the TK classroom teacher.

As a TK Support Staff, you will be supporting the classroom teacher with instruction assistance and supervision, supervising groups of up to 10 TK students (3-4 year old’s), coordinating and implementing recreational programs, tutoring, assisting in the coordination and implementation of the day‑to‑day classroom operations and instruction assistance in TK classrooms.

As a YMCA employee working on a school campus, TK Support Staff are responsible for providing awareness of additional YMCA wrap around programs and services that could benefit LBUSD kids and families.

Program hours are between 8:00am-2:10 or 9am-3:10 (vary by school), Monday through Friday (Everyday). Additional hours available.

We are hiring for TK Support Staff to serve in the TK classrooms on the school campuses of Herrera, Longfellow, Los Cerritos, Naples, and Oropeza Elementary Schools.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate with TK teacher, students, and school faculty to maintain order and assist in creating a safe, inclusive, and fun environment.
  • Support teacher as needed in assistance with the development of engaging lesson plans that are age appropriate (TK) and meet YMCA and LBUSD guidelines.
  • Assist in the coordination and implement age‑appropriate organized play during lunchtime and recess.
  • Supervise students and assist in creating a welcoming environment.
  • Provide resources to families regarding YMCA programs services.
  • Develop relationships with teachers, principals, office staff, and rec aids. Maintain open lines of communication.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings and other organization/agency functions as required by supervisor.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Maintain professional appearance and demeanor. (YMCA uniform at all time.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Full school year commitment preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to employee emotional maturity by controlling frustrations and diffusing situations where others feel tension or stress. Show positive attitude toward the game and all its participants.
  • Follow and enforce site safety standards, policies and procedures.

Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Additionally, demonstrate proof of 48 completed college units or pass district’s Instructional Aide exam required. 12 units of Childhood Education/Child Development units and/or related courses preferred including six units in core courses of Child Human Growth and Development and Child, Family & Community, or Child and Family Relations.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications required within 60 days.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement age‑appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Bilingual with English/Spanish preferred.
  • Public relations skills and/or experience working with a diverse population desired.
  • Effectively communicate, collaborate, and cooperate with colleagues, supervisors, teachers, principals and students.
  • Excellent customer service, communication and leadership skills
  • Background screening clearance.
  • Health screening w/Neg TB and Neg Drug Test Screening.
  • Complete online new employee orientation and child abuse prevention training.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
