Required Qualifications:

* Ph.D. in Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics with a specialization in Statistics, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, or a related field. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2026.

* Ability to teach statistics and/or data science courses at the college level

* Demonstrated potential for published scholarship in statistics and/or data science

* Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students

Preferred Qualifications:

* A record of or demonstrated potential for effectiveness and excellence in teaching statistics and/or data science courses, at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

* Experience or interest in developing undergraduate curricula in statistics and/or data science

* Experience or demonstrated potential for integrating undergraduate and graduate students in research projects

* Research experience and publication records in Statistics, Data Science, High-Performance Computing, Machine Learning, or a related field

* Successful experience at the post-doctoral level or in industry, ideally including interdisciplinary collaboration

* Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body

* Experience mentoring or supporting students with minoritized identities or experience using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom

Duties:

* Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate statistics courses, including data science courses in the BS and MS programs in Applied Statistics. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)

* Participate in professional development to improve teaching effectiveness

* Develop and maintain a research program which leads to publications in refereed journals

* Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students that reflect our diverse student body (e.g., academic advising, thesis and/or project advising , etc.)

* Participate in departmental activities and initiatives, including efforts to improve graduation rates and to develop/improve curricula

* Participate in service to the department, college, university, and profession/community

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics comprises approximately 30 tenured/tenure-track faculty members across four disciplinary groups (pure, applied mathematics, applied statistics, mathematics education) who take pride in teaching at a university that ranks near the top for number of bachelor's degrees awarded to minorities. We are actively involved with community outreach through our training and placement of future teachers, coaching teams of high-schoolers for mathematics contest ARML, organizing our very own Data Day and Math Day at the Beach for high-schoolers, and other activities.

These events are committed to promoting equity and inclusion by providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their background. We aim to break down barriers and ensure that every student has equal access to engaging and enriching mathematics and statistics activities. Additionally, we have a Data Science Learning Community in Long Beach whose purpose is to empower racially-minoritized students and communities through robust community engagement, mentoring and research experiences for underrepresented high school, community college, and university students, and professional development of educators.

Department faculty members work closely, productively, and collegially with departmental colleagues on innovative curriculum development, research, and advising. Faculty teach mathematics, statistics, and math education courses for undergraduate majors, graduate students, and broader audiences. Faculty members provide mentorship to new hires in research, pursuit of grants, teaching, service, and general adjustments to life as a faculty member. The Department seeks an applicant to expand our curriculum offering and collaborate with current faculty in Statistics, Data Science, High-Performance Computing, Machine Learning, or related areas.
