Bay Language Academy is expanding and seeks part‑time Assistant Spanish Teachers/Instructional staff in Alameda and the Bay area. The role involves teaching, curriculum planning, and classroom management for children and young learners.

Location and Schedule

Classes are held in Alameda and possibly surrounding Bay area locations. Adult class shifts are variable (late morning or late afternoon); young student classes are in the afternoon, while some adult classes may be in the evening or morning depending on days and languages. Work is required five days a week in the afternoon, with periodic training and staff meetings with the Director.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise a range of levels within several small group settings
  • Implement TPRS, songs, art, and other engaging activities
  • Deliver a curriculum that covers listening, speaking, reading, writing, presentation, and intercultural knowledge
  • Facilitate positive classroom management strategies
  • Use developmentally appropriate technology relevant to teaching languages
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues as a team
  • Plan a classroom curriculum that meets school standards
  • Encourage students’ critical‑thinking skills
  • Prepare learning materials and assign homework
  • Take attendance, grade assignments, and provide feedback
  • Document student progress and report behavioral incidents
  • Collaborate with other teachers and school personnel to create a healthy and safe learning environment
  • Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications and Required Skills
  • Background in education and prior teaching experience (Bachelor’s degree in education or related field, or experience and passion for interacting with youth)
  • Experience in traditional or non‑traditional settings
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Experience working with young school children
  • Willingness and capacity to assume a wide range of responsibilities
  • Ability to maintain a climate of mutual respect encouraging healthy risk‑taking
  • Practice culturally responsive teaching
  • Ability to utilize sound, developmentally appropriate educational practices related to technology
  • Readiness and willingness to learn; open to new teaching styles
  • Commitment to the training process as a long‑term career
  • Punctuality – essential for class timings and structure
  • Focus on content and language relevant to children, building a positive attitude toward acquisition
  • Integrate arts & crafts with language development
  • Encourage positive participation of all students in daily activities and events
  • Demonstrate flexibility and collaborate with colleagues, families, and other service providers
  • Professionalism, flexibility, and a good attitude
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills
  • Capacity to focus on the whole child, developing academic, physical, emotional, and social aspects
  • Problem‑solving and prioritization skills
  • Willingness to embrace global thinking and cultural competency growth
  • Native or near‑native fluency in Spanish (a plus)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High ethical standards and positive work ethic
  • Skeleton for fingerprint background check and negative TB test required
  • Bilingual or trilingual (plus)
  • State teaching certification (preferred) or a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Previous k‑12 teaching experience preferred
  • Understanding of child development principles and best practices in education and classroom management
  • Knowledge of classroom health, safety, and sanitation guidelines
