Job Summary

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor, under the general supervision of the College of the Art's (COTA) Director of Academic Advising and Lead Advisors, and in consultation with department chair(s), advises undergraduate students on academic requirements, policies, and procedures. The advisor also supports programs and initiatives to enhance the academic success and retention of COTA's undergraduate students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Educate and advise students on their academic requirements.
  • Assist with the implementation of admissions, advising, and enrollment policies and processes.
  • Assist with day‑to‑day coordination of the academic advising program.
  • Serve as a source of referral for academic and student support services.
Education
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four‑year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a related job‑related field.
  • Additional specialized experience may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
Experience
  • Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • Academic advising experience in a higher education setting is preferred.

Physical Summary

Slender work – Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects (10 pounds or less).

Additional Information

Background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSULB will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information or if it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
