Structure Technician

The Structure Technician is responsible for precision drilling and mechanical assembly of aerospace flight hardware. This role focuses on preparing and joining structural components using specialized tooling, adhesives, and fasteners while maintaining tight tolerances and high quality standards. The technician performs in-process inspections, blending and deburring operations, and protects hardware with appropriate treatments to ensure reliability and performance in demanding aerospace environments.

Responsibilities
  • Drill precision holes in aerospace flight hardware, selecting the appropriate drill motors, drill sizes, and pneumatic drilling techniques based on material and design requirements.
  • Use proper tooling, jigs, and fixtures (including egg cups) to ensure accurate hole placement and alignment on structural components.
  • Assemble hardware using structural adhesives, including proper surface preparation, bond prepping, application, and cure processes.
  • Install and properly torque fasteners, including rivets, hiloks, helicoils, and other mechanical fastening systems, following specified torque values and procedures.
  • Install inserts and structural bonding elements to meet engineering and aerospace specifications.
  • Perform in-process inspections using hand measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, and pin gauges to verify dimensions and precision tolerances to within thousandths of an inch.
  • Work to tight precision tolerances (e.g., ±0.001 inch) and ensure all drilled and assembled components meet design and quality requirements.
  • Carry out blending and deburr operations on machined or drilled edges using appropriate hand and power tools to remove burrs and sharp edges.
  • Apply protective treatments such as alodine and sealants to hardware after blending and deburring to prevent corrosion and ensure durability.
  • Handle and assemble aluminum structural components and other aerospace materials in accordance with established mechanical assembly practices.
  • Use torque wrenches and other torque tools accurately to achieve specified torque values on fasteners and verify results as needed.
  • Follow 5S principles to maintain an organized, clean, and efficient work area within the aerospace warehouse environment.
  • Operate forklifts or other material handling equipment, as qualified, to move and stage structural components and hardware safely.
  • Collaborate with engineers, inspectors, and other technicians to resolve assembly or drilling issues and ensure continuous improvement in processes.
  • Answer technical questions and demonstrate practical knowledge of drilling processes, such as explaining step-by-step how to drill a half-inch hole in a given material safely and accurately.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, work instructions, and quality standards applicable to aerospace mechanical assembly and structural bonding.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on experience working with structural components in an aerospace or closely related mechanical environment.
  • Proficiency in drilling operations, including pneumatic drilling, with the ability to select correct drill motors, drill bits, and speeds for different materials.
  • Strong understanding of working with aluminum and other aerospace materials in structural applications.
  • Ability to use torque wrenches and torque tools accurately to achieve specified torque values on fasteners.
  • Experience with structural bonding processes, including bond prepping, surface preparation, and adhesive application.
  • Knowledge of helicoil and insert installation, including proper techniques to ensure secure and accurate threads.
  • Familiarity with mechanical mechanisms and assemblies used in aerospace hardware.
  • Capability to work to precision tolerances, including maintaining dimensions to within thousandths of an inch (e.g., ±0.001 inch).
  • Experience installing hiloks, rivets, and other fastening systems, including drilling, fastening, and sealing operations.
  • Mechanical assembly skills, including reading and following work instructions or basic drawings for hardware assembly.
  • Ability to perform in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, and pin gauges to verify critical dimensions.
  • Experience…
