WSLB is seeking an astute, forward‑thinking, and community‑minded Director of Finance to strategically guide our financial operations and support our vital mission.
About the RoleThe Director of Finance is responsible for the financial health and integrity of WSLB. This role oversees all accounting operations, budget preparation, grant compliance, and financial reporting to the Interim Executive Director and Board of Directors. The ideal candidate is expertly skilled in nonprofit finance and payroll, and has strong experience navigating complex federal, state, and county grants and funding initiatives.
Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Payroll (30%)- Oversee all accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, bank reconciliations, and cash flow management.
- Ensure precise execution of payroll, leveraging a demonstrated understanding of complex California wage & hour laws.
- Monitors and manages all grant spending in alignment with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Proven ability to manage the Cost Allocation process allocating & billing staff time and expenses correctly to the specific grants that fund their respective programs.
- Develop the annual organizational budget.
- Provide accurate, timely monthly and year end financial statements to the Interim ED and the Board.
- Advise the leadership team on financial forecasting, risk management, and resource allocation.
- Serve as the primary lead for the annual independent audit.
- Experience managing insurance policies specific to non‑profits (Directors & Officers, Professional Liability coverage).
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (CPA or Master’s preferred).
- 5+ years of progressive financial management experience, strictly within the non‑profit sector.
- Deep expertise in non‑profit fund accounting, grant compliance, and accounting software (e.g., Quick Books Enterprise, MIP, or Sage).
- Mastery of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for non‑profits.
- Demonstrated understanding of California wage & hour regulations and payroll processing.
- Valid CA driver’s license and auto insurance.
- Experience tracking Restricted vs. Unrestricted funds across multiple government contracts (Cal OES, HUD, City of Long Beach).
- Experience leading Single Audits (Uniform Guidance) for organizations receiving over $750k in federal funding.
- Ability to provide the Interim ED with Burn Rate analysis and cash flow forecasting to navigate the delayed reimbursement cycles common in government granting.

- Able to climb stairs and lift/carry up to 20 lbs.
- Willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.
