Sign language interpreters facilitate the communication and integration of deaf and hearing impaired, or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty, staff and universityguests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and intothe university community either by way of American Sign language(ASL), or Signed English, Transliteration (a manual, oral ortactile system of communication.)

• Sign language interpreters provide communication access byconveying verbal information into a mode of communication bestunderstood by the deaf, hearing impaired and/or otherwise disabled students, faculty, staff and university guests. Work with students in the Interpreting program, viewing their performance and providing feedback.

Linguistics

Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire priorto the ending date.

Hourly Interpreter/Real Time Captioner/Computer Aided Transcriber

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

The salary range for this classification is $55 to $70 perhour.

The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to adapt to a widerange of interpreting needs and possesses a high degree oflinguistic, cognitive, and technical proficiency. They have astrong understanding of Deaf Culture and are skilled in working across the full spectrum of sign modalities, from American Sign Language (ASL) to Signed English. The candidate exhibitsexceptional attention to detail and accuracy, outstanding listening skills, and a thorough command of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.

They possess strong receptive and expressivecommunication abilities, accurately conveying the speaker'smessage, intent, tone, register, and content between languages. Theideal candidate exercises sound professional judgment whenaccepting assignments based on skill level, subject matterfamiliarity, and the diversity of consumers and settings. They work effectively with consumers while adhering to industry-specific

Codes of Ethics, Standards of Professional Practice, and confidentiality requirements. Additionally, they build and maintain positive professional relationships with students, faculty, staff,campus officials, and guests across classroom settings, campusevents, and other functions. The candidate communicatesdiplomatically and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders,collaborates closely as part of a team, and fosters cooperative working relationships through a positive, respectful attitude. Theyconsistently demonstrate reliability by reporting to work on time,prepared to perform all assigned duties, and possess a strong working knowledge of standard workplace practices.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diversecampus community. Ability to follow all university policies,procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety,civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive universityexperience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence".

Sign language interpreters are required to complete an Interpreter Training Program (ITP).
