About this role:Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Financial Management, the Risk Manager leads programs and practices designed to identify, assess, and mitigate risk and potential liability associated with university activities and initiatives. The role serves as a primary resource to the campus community and general publicon risk management matters while overseeing two Risk Professional team members.
With responsibility spanning risk assessment, insurance programs, tort liability, claims, contracts, and legal holds, this position offers the opportunity to influence how risk is understood and managed across a complex university environment.
How you will spend your timeRisk Identification, Assessment & Mitigation (60%)
- Serve as a primary point of contact for campus-related risk management matters, providing guidance to university stakeholders and the public.
- Assess university and auxiliary organization activities, identify potential liability, and recommend practical strategies to reduce institutional risk.
- Interpret laws, regulations, CSU requirements, and university policies to develop and strengthen risk management policies, procedures, and programs.
- Partner with faculty and campus stakeholders to address risk requirements associated with student events, activities, and travel, including waivers, releases, and supporting documentation.
- Collaborate with Procurement to evaluate insurance and indemnification provisions in contracts, recommend revisions, review certificates of insurance, and determine appropriate insurance requirements within CSU guidelines.
Tort Liability & Insurance Program Management (25%)
- Lead CSULB's tort liability and commercial insurance programs, including the fiscal responsibilities associated with Risk Management.
- Manage insurance programs covering areas such as property, inland marine, student professional liability, foreign travel liability, vehicles, special events, and student travel accidents.
- Oversee claims, excluding workers' compensation, and guide claimants through applicable processes, coverage limits, and exclusions.
- Partner with commercial insurance representatives and attorneys to support claim resolution.
- Review and investigate tort liability claims against the university, assess campus liability, and determine appropriate claim outcomes.
Legal Holds (5%)
- Coordinate legal hold processes to ensure relevant university records and information are appropriately preserved in connection with litigation.
- Partner with Information Technology on electronic legal holds and work with University Counsel and the CSU Chancellor's Office General Counsel team as needed.
- Represent the university in small claims and restitution proceedings.
