Summary
Position for a Registered Nurse Community Living Center (CLC) Staff Educator in the Geriatrics & Extended Care Service for VA Long Beach Healthcare System, located in Long Beach, California.
Qualifications- English language proficiency (basic written and spoken).
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing school (ACEN or CCNE) at the time of completion.
- OR attendee of a master's level bridge program with coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing; may be appointed on a temporary basis until license obtained.
- Upon state license attainment, may be converted to a permanent appointment after completion of the bridge program.
- Reference: VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6.
- OR graduates of foreign professional nursing schools with current, full, active, and unrestricted registration; credit for education higher than associate degree requires formal equivalency validation from a recognized evaluator (e.g., International Consultants of Delaware).
- Current full registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or District of Columbia.
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates without licensure may be appointed on a 120‑day temporary basis while pursuing licensure; may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis.
- Grandfathering provision: all persons currently employed in the VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties described as of 1/29/2024 are considered to have met all qualification requirements.

- Physical requirements:
Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); straight pulling, pushing, walking, standing; repeated bending (8‑12 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands and legs required; rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision correctable to 13–16 inches to Jaeger 1–4; far vision 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other; both eyes; depth perception; color discrimination; hearing (aid permitted); emotional/mental stability;
keyboarding and computer screen reading (8‑12 hours intermittently).
- Responsible for providing evidence‑based education to staff.
- Provide educational instruction and training for nursing staff in clinical and outpatient units.
- Understand instructional design, implementation, and application related to education and training.
- Perform learning needs assessments and develop educational training for clinical staff.
- Assist with orientation of new employees, evaluate progress, and develop learning plans to address deficiencies.
- Serve as a trainer and consultant for Resuscitation Education Initiative (REIDI) Program, including BLS instructor certification.
- Monitor and track BLS/ALS compliance.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support and evaluate emergency responses.
- Organize, participate, and evaluate mock codes.
- Support nurse residency programs, developing curricula using simulation, lecture, case studies, and virtual reality.
- Develop coaching and mentoring skills.
- Systematically evaluate current practice, formulate outcomes for patient or organizational processes.
- Collaborate with other Clinical Nurse Educators and interprofessional teams on clinical education activities, including in‑services, training, competency assessment, and evaluations.
- Review current nursing literature for trends and evidence‑based changes; propose practice and documentation revisions.
- Collaborate with leadership and unit managers to identify educational training needs and support competence, critical thinking, and decision making.
- Provide consultation and collaboration through participation in organizational committees.
- Analyze, interpret, and evaluate data to determine outcomes and changes related to educational programs.
- Preferred experience:
Recent RN experience in geriatric, gerontology, palliative care, or elder care settings such as CLC or rehabilitation center. - Demonstrate ability to improve communication and interactions, inspire teamwork, and ensure safe and effective outcomes.
