Under the direction of the Supervising Plumber, this position provides skilled plumbing work in installation, repair, and maintenance of university structures, minor construction and special projects.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain piping systems including water, gas, air, steam, vacuum, storm drains, waste lines, irrigation systems, and related traps and valves.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance requiring repair or replacement of plumbing parts or equipment when necessary.
- Test, certify, and repair backflow preventive devices.
- Ensure tools, materials, and equipment are available for efficient and economical job execution.
- Assist in all university functions and respond to emergency situations as required.
- High school diploma and journey‑level plumber skills, typically obtained through completion of a plumber apprenticeship program.
- Valid California driver’s license.
- City of Long Beach Health Department certificate for Limited Backflow Prevention Device Tester (highly desirable; must be obtained within six months of hiring).
- Knowledge of the Uniform Plumbing Code and applicable Division of Industrial Safety regulations.
- Strong command of plumbing trade tools, equipment, and techniques, including reading blueprints and interpreting detailed specifications.
- Experience operating a backhoe is desirable.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to interact positively with colleagues, customers, and the campus community.
- Experience in a university or large public institutional setting is preferred.
- Ability to communicate with a diverse campus community and follow university policies and procedures, including safety, civility, and non‑discrimination.
