Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services or a designee, the Lead Grounds worker assists, supervises, and coordinates the activities of grounds workers, gardeners, gardening specialists, and other technicians engaged in general grounds maintenance. Responsibilities include planning, scheduling, and supervising routine maintenance; providing training; interpreting policies and procedures; and ensuring work meets university standards.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, schedule, assign, and supervise routine maintenance functions.
- Provide training, interpret policies, and explain methods and procedures to staff.
- Maintain, install, and develop new planting sites and restore existing landscaping.
- Schedule irrigation controls using the Rain Master central irrigation system.
- Coordinate with outside contractors/vendors and inspect work for compliance with university standards.
The Lead Grounds worker works within FM Grounds under Beach Building Services (BBS), which supports university operations and student life through facilities maintenance and campus services.
Time Base1.0 time base, 40 hours per week.
Duration of AppointmentTemporary position for one year; no permanent status is guaranteed.

CompensationSalary is based on education, experience, and qualifications. CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,890 (Step #1) to $5,555 (Step #20) per month.

- Expertise in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees.
- Knowledge of plant diseases, pests, weeds, and approved control methods.
- Proficiency in irrigation programming, scheduling, design, and installation.
- Ability to draft, coordinate, and supervise work of others; provide training and explain procedures.
- Ability to read blueprints and evaluate work quality.
- Basic computer skills, including email use and other program operation.
- Effective communication with a diverse campus community.
- Compliance with university policies on safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination.
- High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in planting, cultivating, or maintaining flowers, shrubs, or general grounds maintenance.
- Valid California driver’s license required.
Medium work. Job involves lifting 20–40 pounds and standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking 20–40% of the time. May require pushing or pulling objects within weight limits.
