Job Summary
Sign language interpreters facilitate communication and integration of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty, staff, and university guests) into classroom settings and the broader university community by way of American Sign Language (ASL), Signed English, or other sign modalities. The role also provides culturally sensitive, equitable services that enhance the quality of campus life, using a student‑centered, equity‑minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
Key Responsibilities- Convey verbal information into the communication mode best understood by the deaf, hard‑of‑hearing, or otherwise disabled audience.
The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to adapt to a wide range of interpreting needs and possesses strong linguistic, cognitive, and technical skills. Experience across the full spectrum of sign modalities (from ASL to Signed English) is required, and the candidate must be able to transition between in‑person and remote interpreting as modalities change. Attention to detail, excellent listening skills, and strong command of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation are essential.
The candidate must exercise sound judgment when accepting assignments and adhere to professional ethical standards and confidentiality requirements, building respectful relationships with students, faculty, staff, campus officials, and guests.
- Completion of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 2 years of volunteer and/or paid experience, or completion of a 4‑year degree in Deaf Studies or a related field.
- Professional certification recognized at state and national levels, such as NIC certification granted by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). National Interpreter Certification (NIC) is preferred but not required.
