This position requires candidates to work the entire duration of the 10-week summer day camp program, including planning and collaborating with co-directors, and attending orientation and trainings prior to the start of camp. Must be available to work a constant schedule between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for an average total of 40 hours per week.
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award‑winning organization with 1,100 full‑time/part time staff and a budget of $85 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.
The Department provides free and fee‑based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self‑directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised after school and weekend activities at parks and schools.
In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non‑Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.
Non‑Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12‑month period and are considered temporary, at‑will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non‑career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.
Responsibilities- Work closely with the Aquatics Supervisor to plan and implement aquatics day camp programming.
- Assist the Aquatics Supervisor with ongoing staff training and annual in‑service training.
- Supervise staff and aquatics day camp participants.
- Instruct a variety of swim lessons for camp participants at different levels and complete swim lesson evaluations.
- Monitor and maintain accurate registration and attendance records.
- Prepares and develops program materials.
- Collect excursion fees and submit corresponding reports.
- Maintain equipment and supplies.
- Act as lead staff in emergency and rescue situations, including documenting of all incidents.
- Drive to offsite meetings and/or trainings.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Must meet at least one of the options below:
- (Option
A) - Two (2) years (or equivalent 500 hours total) of part‑time experience (paid or unpaid) working in aquatics or a related field;
OR

B) - Forty‑eight (48) units of college education, including a minimum of eight (8) units in aquatics or a related field;

C) - A combination of education and experience as outlined above.

- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, CPR/AED for Lifeguards, and Water Safety Instructor certification is required.
- Ability to complete a swim test that consists of 200 yard swim in freestyle/breaststroke, 75 yard stroke demonstration, brick retrieval, and treading water.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Must have reliable transportation during work shift hours.
- Must be willing to work various shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word is required.
- Experience working with children and youth with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds is desirable.
- Proficiency in the use of Excel, Publisher, and Canva is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in the use of the Active Net registration program is desirable.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
- Experience implementing recreation programs for youth.
