Team

The Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining the Port’s infrastructure and Port‑owned facilities. The division’s crews include Roads and Streets, Landscaping, Plumbing, Electrical, Garage, Docks & Piers, Carpentry, Building Mechanical, Custodial, General Maintenance, and a small office staff and warehouse. Their work is typically performed in response to work requests from other divisions of the Harbor Department or for the Port’s tenants on a for‑hire basis.

The Role

The Maintenance Division is seeking one (1) Non‑Career Maintenance Assistant III to join the Warehouse Team. This position supports daily warehouse operations by receiving, storing, organizing, and tracking inventory; conducting cycle counts; operating material‑handling equipment; and maintaining a safe, clean, and organized warehouse environment. The Maintenance Assistant III also assists with inventory accuracy initiatives, warehouse maintenance activities, and operational support to ensure efficient and compliant warehouse operations.

Non‑Career employees may work up to 29 hours per week and are allowed a maximum of 1,600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. The assignment may end at any time but will never extend beyond two years. Non‑Career employees are temporary, at‑will employees and are typically not eligible for benefits, though they may qualify for health coverage and sick‑leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

You Get to Contribute
  • Perform routine warehouse maintenance tasks, including organizing and labeling inventory locations, assembling and adjusting racking, conducting cycle counts, and updating signage for newly introduced inventory.
  • Conduct cycle counts and assist with inventory accuracy initiatives.
  • Perform receiving and put‑away activities.
  • Operate light to medium equipment, including forklifts and pallet jacks (forklift certification required within a designated time frame).
  • Ensure orderliness, cleanliness, and compliance with established storage and accounting procedures.
  • May be required to support and provide coverage for daily warehouse operations as needed.
  • Maintain warehouse cleanliness, organization, and safety standards.
Education, Knowledge & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience performing maintenance, warehouse, or material‑handling duties.
  • Experience operating light to medium equipment preferred.
  • Previous warehouse reorganization or inventory support experience is desirable.
  • Knowledge of routine semi‑skilled maintenance practices and safe operation of light to medium equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper material handling, stacking, palletizing, and storage procedures within a warehouse setting.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards, including equipment operation and hazard identification.
  • Basic knowledge of inventory practices, such as labeling, organization, and conducting cycle counts.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and apply them in a structured, rule‑driven warehouse environment.
Technical Skills Needed
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification upon hiring.
  • Ability to operate pallet jacks.
  • Ability to use common hand and power tools.
