Job Summary

This position performs journeyman-level work and participates in mechanical and electrical repair and operation and machinery and participates in the carpentry operation of University buildings areas, equipment, including light wood construction, hanging and finishing sheetrock and painting. As needed, this position performs landscaping, moves furniture, and coordinates with other trades.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervises, coordinates with other trades, and participates in electrical and mechanical repair operations to University equipment, and HVAC building systems.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical equipment and circuits, such as wires, control switches, outlets, junction boxes, transformers, motors, and generators in facilities; this could include washers, dryers, ranges, stoves, ovens, pumps, lighting equipment, centrifuge systems, smoke detectors, fire alarms, hypothermal units, humidifiers, thermostats, and electrical systems of furnace and boilers.
  • Coordinates with other trades, and participates in all types of repair and construction to include: woodwork, cabinet work, furniture work, metalwork, hardware installation and adjustments, door hanging, window repair, and other jobs incidental to maintenance of buildings and needed improvements. Performs inspections and preventive maintenance tasks of campus fire suppression equipment.
  • Operates University vehicles, lawn care equipment, tractors, edgers, trimmers, and other power operated or mechanical devices used by Physical Plant personnel to complete landscaping work.
  • Maintains electrical shop equipment and inventory in safe and productive manner and accounts for all activities and equipment relating to the specific shop area.
  • Serves as a member of the Physical Plant Essential Personnel and as directed by the Director of Physical Plant participates in pre-emergency preparations and emergency recovery efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and at least four years' experience in the operations, maintenance, and repair of facility electrical and mechanical equipment and systems and/or related experience. Valid driver's license required. Must be eligible to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card upon employment.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to read blueprints, specification manuals and design drawings.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
    • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
    • Ability to operate personal computer with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the internet.
    • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines.
    • Organizational skills in managing projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.
    • Ability to drive a forklift, tractor and/or loader.
    • Ability to work nights and weekends when required.
    • Skilled in the use of power and hand tools.
    • Knowledge of plumbing, commercial painting, and carpentry trade.
    Preferred Qualifications

    Five years' experience in operations, maintenance, and repair of facility electrical and mechanical equipment and systems and/or related experiences.
