Job Overview:
The Mental Health Technician- MHT is a member of the multidisciplinary patient care team. Works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse to provide care to patients with diverse psychiatric illnesses.
- Provide essential care for patients requiring special precautions and remain with the assigned patient at all times during the shift unless relieved for breaks or meals.
- Remain alert and observant to prevent injury or escape, engage in therapeutic communication and activities to distract, occupy, and develop therapeutic rapport.
- Adhere to hospital policies on confidentiality, infection control, and compassionate care.
- Comply with patient restrictions and effectively manage aggressive, violent, and confused behavior as required.
- Follow written hospital policies and procedures and strive for the highest possible level of competence with concern and consideration.
- Report identified safety issues (e.g., hazardous environments) and medical errors as appropriate.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalency
- One year of Nurse Aide/Assistant/CHHA/Emergency Medical Technician experience, or satisfactory completion of an Aide training program
- 3-5 years of related experience in psychiatric or geriatric-psychiatric services setting
- Preferably at least one year experience as a phlebotomist and/or EKG technician with health care background
- Must successfully complete MMC clinical training orientation
- Annual BEST certification
