Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Senior Finance Business Partner (SFBP) to join our Financial Management team at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. As an SFBP, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the financial performance of our clinical services. In this senior position, you will act as a finance lead for a portfolio of clinical areas, working in close collaboration with clinical and operational leadership teams.

You will use your financial expertise and insightful analysis to support and challenge day‑to‑day decision making, drive positive outcomes, and ensure the best possible use of resources across our services. The successful candidate will also be key member of the Trust's Finance Department, contributing actively to the delivery of its overall objectives and supporting the continual improvement of financial performance across the organisation.

You will bring exceptional organisational and communication skills, with the confidence to prioritise a busy workload and work flexibly to meet tight and competing deadlines. Candidates must be CCAB qualified accountants and have substantial relevant experience working in a financial management environment. Exposure to finance within the NHS would also be advantageous.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Act as the lead financial specialist in the Group, supporting the Head of Finance / Deputy Head of Finance in providing a comprehensive financial and performance management service.
  • Provide business‑focused advice and develop stakeholder relationships, identifying cost savings and productivity opportunities.
  • Lead and develop a team; manage recruitment, training, performance and disciplinary matters for staff accountable to the SFBP.
  • Coordinate the team to ensure smooth delivery of month‑end processes and reporting and support Trust‑wide projects and initiatives.
Qualifications – Essential
  • Qualified CCAB accountant and in compliance with all professional ethics of the appointing accounting body.
  • Degree level education.
  • Engaged in continuing professional development and maintains professional registration.
  • Provide advice, guidance and training to Finance and Information Department staff as well as non‑financial managers.
  • Full working knowledge of General Ledger system and associated software.
  • High level of computer literacy.
Qualifications – Desirable
  • Post‑graduate qualifications such as Masters or MBA.
  • Appropriate understanding of NHS accounting treatments required by legislation or Department of Health policies.
Experience – Essential
  • Significant management accounting experience.
  • Staff management experience including recruitment, selection, objective setting, appraisals and performance management.
  • Presentation of highly complex financial and non‑financial information.
  • Inspiring confidence & developing highly effective working relationships with finance, clinical and non‑finance colleagues, including those at a senior level.
  • Presentation of financial information and leading financial discussions at management level meetings.
  • Supporting managers and clinicians in the use of service line reporting & patient‑level cost information.
Experience – Desirable
  • Significant experience of the NHS or similar clinical environment.
  • Identifying opportunities for change and successful management of the change process.
Additional Criteria – Essential
  • Expert understanding of management accounting processes and best practice, including forecasting, modelling and trend analysis.
  • High level financial management skills, proactively identifying and mitigating emerging financial risks.
  • Highly developed analytical and interpretative skills to understand financial, information and performance management needs of a large and complex organisation.
  • Demonstrate high standards of interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisational skills.
  • Work autonomously and under pressure to meet strict reporting deadlines.
  • High level IT skill on usage of financial ledgers, budgeting, costing, payroll systems.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
