Definition:
This is an entry level position similar to an apprenticeship that receives training and performs a
variety of skilled technical duties related to the operation and maintenance of the City's
transportation and stormwater networks (streets, sidewalks, alleys, curbs, gutters, storm drains,
signs/ markings, parking lots, traffic control and snow response operations). This position also
supports the operation and maintenance of the potable Water Distribution System and
Wastewater Collection Systems at a basic level under the direction of appropriately certified
personnel. Persons recruited in this position will be trained to work within the parameters of an
existing operating plan and will be supported either by other onsite or on-call personnel as
needed to address more difficult and advanced level tasks.

Principal Duties:
Employees working in this career-series job classification perform a wide variety of technical
tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the transportation and stormwater network
and support the operation and maintenance of pressurized systems (i.e., Distribution system and
sewer lift stations), and/or gravity systems (Collection and Stormwater) depending on
assignment. Public Works Technician I employees work in teams and independently in an
apprentice role and must demonstrate a collaborative and self-directed approach to routine
tasks and project-related assignments. Routine and project work requires active and
independent learning skills; and the ability to review system records and documents, conduct
technology reviews, and learn to troubleshoot problems. Employee must also demonstrate
cooperative teamwork skills to address shared work assignments and to facilitate sharing and
acting upon critical information. Examples of tasks and duties that will be developed in this
apprentice role include but are not limited to the following:

Technical:

• Perform concrete repair work; set concrete forms, prepare ground and pack
surface, pour and finish concrete.

• Perform construction, maintenance, and repair work of City streets, sidewalks,
alleys, parking lots, gutters, and storm drains including patching potholes,
grading, trenching, asphalt paving, crack sealing, and storm drainage gutter and
grate cleaning signs and markings.
