At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

The role is part of the In‑Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on‑orbit.

Role Overview

Are you ready to transform the way we reach space? Blue Origin’s National Security division is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our Core Systems and Components team. In this influential role, you will architect and deliver cutting‑edge, mission‑critical systems that empower U.S. government and defense initiatives. Working alongside world‑class multidisciplinary teams, you’ll drive the development of resilient, scalable solutions for next‑generation spacecraft and ground systems.

Bring your vision and expertise to Blue Origin—and help us redefine what’s possible in national security space.

Responsibilities
  • Lead technical development, integration, and validation of spacecraft/ground system architectures and subsystems.
  • Develop system requirements, interface definitions, and verification plans.
  • Drive the end‑to‑end systems engineering lifecycle: concept, risk analysis, trade studies, design, test, and delivery.
  • Interface with government customers and internal stakeholders to capture mission needs and translate them into actionable system requirements.
  • Serve as technical mentor for junior engineers, fostering growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Identify, mitigate, and track risks across system design and integration.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, documentation, and status reports.
  • Support proposal development and technology road‑mapping for future systems.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in systems engineering for aerospace or defense platforms.
  • Deep familiarity with electro‑mechanical devices and control systems.
  • Proven ability to identify and mature technologies from outside the space market and adapt them for flight applications.
  • Systems Engineering experience across multidisciplinary domains for space, including electronics, software, FPGA, magnetics, controls, and mechanical engineering.
  • Proven success in applying Design‑for‑X principles (Cost, Production, Testability, etc.) in system development.
  • Experience integrating rapid, iterative development processes with hardware‑centric systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency throughout the full systems engineering lifecycle, with emphasis on system architecture, formulation, and balancing requirements.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards (e.g., MIL‑STD, NASA standards).
  • Experience with model‑based systems engineering tools and practices.
  • Familiarity with JIRA and Confluence collaboration tools.
  • Strong desire to leverage AI tools in daily work and in the systems engineering process.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in relevant engineering discipline.
  • Familiarity with software‑hardware co‑design in mission‑critical systems.
  • Experience with system reliability and sustainment engineering.
  • Experience with Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) components, such as sensors, actuators, or flight algorithms.
  • Hands‑on experience with reaction wheels or other spacecraft attitude control subsystems.
