Position Overview
The Engine Shop Service Technician position is responsible for performing inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel-powered or natural gas industrial engines or related components, following established procedures and guidelines. The technician can work independently or as a member of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfy customer needs and achieve departmental goals.

Mid-level position – generally has more than four years of experience and/or demonstrated job‑relevant knowledge/skills. A Level III Technician has moderate knowledge of the field's standard and technical concepts, practices, and procedures. Level III Technician performs a variety of standard, complex, and technical tasks; is indirectly supervised and self‑starting; often a team member on a large project.

- Models, promotes, reinforces, and rewards the consistent use of HOLT's Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our Vision, Values, and Mission
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses industrial diesel and natural gas engines
- Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturer's specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and any specialized tooling
- Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components
- Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management
- Plans and controls cost of repair jobs
- Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return
- Mentors and helps train other technicians
- Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps in good, clean, and orderly condition
- Completes all documents associated with repairs in a timely manner
- Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
- Works overtime as required by workload and customers' needs
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; e.g., Pro Tech Technician Training Paths
- Requires regular and punctual employee attendance
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Knowledge of industrial diesel and natural gas engine rebuilding
- Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems – CAT ET & CAT SIS
- Quality‑control analysis skills – conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings
- Operation and control skills – controlling operations of equipment or systems
- Equipment selection skills – determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
- Ability to operate a conventional forklift and an overhead crane
- Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
- Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
- Ability to read, write, and understand information
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
- Must have/acquire basic mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard)
- Four or more years of diesel or natural gas engines experience
- Ability and knowledge to read/use schematics and diagrams – experience preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent – preferred
- Graduation from a diesel technology program – preferred
