Bus Driver – 2025‑2026 School Year
At a Glance: As a Bus Driver, you’ll play a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and dependable transportation experience for children and families. You’ll be responsible for driving assigned routes, following all traffic laws, and ensuring every rider arrives safely and on time—making a meaningful impact in their daily journey.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain a strict adherence to the assigned schedule and run fixed routes as written.
- Keep the vehicle clean and hygienic, both inside and outside.
- Perform pre‑trip inspections and report any mechanical defects immediately.
- Ensure students are discharged only at authorized stops and to authorized individuals.
- Notify the Transportation Manager at least one hour ahead of time if you cannot work.
- Produce required reports, including daily vehicle reports, incident reports, and behavior management referrals.
- Conduct thorough post‑trip inspections for student safety and vehicle condition.
- Comply with all safety requirements, state school bus laws, regulations, and program procedures.
- Use reasonable precautions to safeguard children, parents, yourself, the public, and fellow employees.
- Immediately report incidents, accidents, or safety hazards via radio, cell phone, or other communications.
- Assist in medication transport and chain‑of‑custody documentation.
- Lead safety drills for children and parents, and prepare emergency evacuation plans with the Transportation Manager.
- Operate wheelchair lifts and secure wheelchairs to prevent injury during turns and bumps.
- Participate in all required training sessions.
- Communicate professionally in all routine and unusual situations.
- Report any student behavior concerns to the proper authority.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and tolerance.
- 21 years of age or older.
- Valid Washington State CDL Class B Driver’s License with passenger and school (S) endorsement.
- Completion of Washington State school bus driver training certificate.
- At least 5 years of experience driving a regular vehicle or 1 year of experience driving a commercial vehicle.
- Physical examination certifying the capability to perform job duties.
- Valid first aid card and CPR endorsement.
- Positive attitude toward working with children and adults.
- Clear driving record, to be verified before hire.
- Not terminated from a previous driving job due to a safety infraction or drug/alcohol violation.
- Current Washington State CDL Class B with passenger and school endorsement.
- Background checks:
Washington State Patrol, Sex Offender Registry, MERIT fingerprinting. - TB test completed within the last year.
- Immunization record (MMR vaccine or proof of immunity).
- Drug and alcohol screening.
- Hearing adequate to detect traffic sounds from any direction.
- Vision of 20/40 with or without correction; ~140° peripheral vision.
- Color vision capable of discerning red, green, and amber traffic lights.
- Ability to operate all controls and equipment on a school bus.
- Physical strength and agility to perform daily safety inspections and assist students during evacuations.
- Capability to exit the bus from a seated position within 25 seconds.
