SummaryThe Surveying Field Technician will report to the VDC Manager. This individual will be a highly visible representative of the company and responsible for maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, professionalism, and field coordination. The technician will support mechanical, plumbing, and utility installation by collecting, verifying, and marking field layout points generated by the BIM Team. This role requires the ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot Trimble Total Station equipment and the Trimble X7 scanner.
The Surveying Field Technician must be adept, quick to learn, and capable of working both independently and with multiple field trades. This individual will also assist in capturing as‑built conditions and progress documentation through 3D scanning workflows.
- Maintain a presentable and professional appearance at all times.
- Provide top‑quality layout and surveying work with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ensure all field layout work is compliant with CES standards and BIM coordination requirements.
- Utilize Trimble Total Station equipment to collect, verify, and mark field points for mechanical, plumbing, and utility installations.
- Work directly with field foremen to ensure proper location, routing, and installation based on BIM‑generated points.
- Conduct 3D laser scanning using the Trimble X7 to capture field conditions, progress scans, and as‑built documentation.
- Process and upload point clouds, layout files, and survey reports in a timely and accurate manner.
- Provide detailed feedback to BIM Team regarding field discrepancies, clashes, or installation variances.
- Complete all job tasks as expected by project teams and follow up to ensure accuracy and satisfaction.
- Ensure all surveying and scanning documentation is accurate, legible, and completed promptly.
- Ability to complete layout and scanning tasks unsupervised and unassisted.
- Help train team members on CES layout standards, surveying best practices, and scanning workflows.
- Maintain all company‑issued surveying and scanning equipment in clean, calibrated, and operational condition.
- Immediately report necessary repairs or calibration needs for company surveying equipment.
- Confirm company vehicle usage is solely for company requirements.
- Operate company vehicles safely and legally at all times; cell phone use while driving is prohibited.
- Report vehicle accidents to management without delay.
- Participate in rotation schedules as required for field support.
- Travel to various project sites as needed to perform layout, scanning, or verification tasks.
- Responsible for having the hand tools and equipment necessary to perform surveying and field layout duties.
- Company‑assigned tools must be checked in and out with the appropriate manager.
- Immediately report any tools or equipment in need of repair.
- All tools company or individually owned must remain in safe working conditions.
- Must complete all tasks in a safe manner at all times, following CES safety policies.
- Report all accidents or unsafe conditions immediately, no matter how minor.
- Unsafe conduct will not be tolerated.
- Perform other related duties and assignments as required.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient in operating Trimble Total Stations (Trimble RTS series)
- Skilled in operating and maintaining Trimble X7 3D laser scanners
- Ability to process and manage point clouds, survey files, and layout data
- Strong understanding of surveying principles, control points, and layout workflows
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, BIM models, and utility coordination plans
- Familiarity with layout and scanning software (Trimble Field Link, Trimble Perspective, etc.)
