Building Official

The Community Development Department is looking to fill its Building Official position, and is seeking applicants who are looking for the opportunity to lead a responsive and customer service-oriented Building Division operation that challenges people’s perceptions about working with their local government.

The City of Longwood is located in Seminole County, Florida and has a population of approximately 17,000 people over approximately 6 square miles. On average, the Building Division processes approximately 1,900 permits and completes over 5,000 inspections annually with a staff including an Inspector/Plans Examiner, a Building Inspector, two Permit Clerks, and administrative support from a Senior Administrative Assistant.

We all know that many of our customers expect difficulty in dealing with their local government. Our mission has been to change that perception by being responsive, providing guidance before the first permit is even submitted for a project, and working to “get to yes” on difficult issues without compromising on safety and the codes and regulations that govern building construction.

We are looking for a Building Official to help us maintain our positive relationship with our residents and development community and to be a key part of our Economic Development strategy while working with the other members of our experienced and cohesive Planning and Economic Development functions as well as our Engineering team in Public Works.

• Must possess the following State of Florida Licenses:
  Building Code Administrators License, Plans Examiners License, and Standard Inspectors License.
• Minimum three (3) years of management experience in a city or county building department required.
• Experience as a Building Code Administrator or Building Official required (Deputy positions considered).
• A minimum of ten (10) years total experience in the construction field.
• Must have a proven track record in the provision of customer service, along with administrative and processes efficiency.
• Must maintain a Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Must have or be able to complete IC 100 and 700 courses within six (6) months of hire.
