Job Overview

Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Deputy Chief of Police / Administrative Lieutenant / Law Enforcement Officer II (00128) in the Department of Police and Public Safety. The role serves as the department's second‑in‑command for administrative operations, functioning as a second‑level law enforcement supervisor and principal compliance officer. It reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Public Safety & Chief of Police and carries broad responsibility across records management, state accreditation, Clery Act compliance, emergency communications, technology infrastructure, and personnel management.

Responsibilities And Duties
  • Lead the LUPD process for obtaining and maintaining Virginia State Law Enforcement Accreditation.
  • Review and monitor officer reports in the department Records Management System (RMS) for accuracy; approve or return for revision.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for crime statistical and background check inquiries.
  • Forward completed reports to the Commonwealth Attorney's Office and other authorized recipients as required.
  • Supervise and ensure the ongoing integrity of the department's evidence room, lost and found, and surplus property.
  • Communicate clear, measurable performance expectations aligned with departmental goals.
  • Provide frequent, constructive feedback and conduct interim and formal evaluations.
  • Identify training needs, resource gaps, and professional development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Address and document performance and safety issues promptly and thoroughly.
  • Complete all performance planning and evaluation activities within established deadlines.
  • Compile and submit timely, accurate Incident‑Based Reports (I ) to the Virginia State Police.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Compile and analyze crime data for trend identification, officer productivity assessment, and campus notification.
  • Maintain and update the daily crime report.
  • Assume patrol command and manage operations in the Patrol Lieutenant's absence.
  • Oversee the collection of all required Clery data from departmental and campus partner sources.
  • Gather student travel information and liaise with external law enforcement for crime statistics.
  • Compile and submit the University's Annual Security and Fire Report to the U.S. Department of Education in full compliance with the Clery Act.
  • Serve as LUPD liaison with the Farmville Emergency Communication Center.
  • Draft and recommend policies governing dispatch protocols, interoperability, and critical infrastructure.
  • Advocate for continuous improvement in police service delivery at the front office and agency levels.
Special Assignments & Collateral Responsibilities
  • Hiring Coordinator – coordinate applicant screening, interviewing, and hiring in cooperation with the Chief of Police; ensure adherence to agency, state, and federal regulations.
  • Campus Alert System Administrator – oversee operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the University Alert System; maintain dissemination records per applicable policy and statute.
  • VCIN/NCIC/Live Scan Coordinator – work with the Farmville Communication Center to ensure LUPD compliance with all VCIN/NCIC regulations; ensure access controls for authorized personnel only.
  • Property & Evidence Supervisor – ensure proper securing, documentation, and destruction of evidence; oversee general property and agency surplus processes.
