This is a PRN "As Needed" Position

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Psychoeducation Specialist provides direct patient care under the guidance of a designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, and within policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Essential Job Functions
  • Facilitates groups. Provides individual activities tailored to the specific needs of patients (within scope). May participate in family meetings and treatment team meetings.
  • Discharge planning in collaboration with Social Worker team.
  • Community resource knowledge and coordination of activities; particularly in the area of specialized activities such as pet therapy, nutrition, yoga.
  • Completes leisure assessments.
  • Care planning.
  • May provide 1:1 patient safety companion service as needed.
  • May provide 15-minute patient checks as assigned.
  • Successfully participates to complete BSMH and departmental specific training as required.

Licensing/Certification

Must be licensed, certified, or registered as appropriate by state and national licensing boards in one of the following:

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)
  • Registered Art Therapist (ATR)
  • Provisional Registered Art Therapist (ATR-P)
  • Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC)
  • Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC)
  • Registered Dance/Movement Therapist (R-DMT)
  • Occupational Therapist Licensed (OTR/L)
Education

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Expressive Therapy (Music, Dance/Movement), Counseling, or Human Services (required).

Work Experience

1 year in social or human services setting (required).

Patient Population
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age and specific needs, to provide care as described in departmental policies and procedures.
Working Conditions
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
  • Long-distance or air travel as needed – not to exceed 10% travel.
  • General office environment.
  • May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.
  • May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
  • May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids.
  • May be required to use physical restraints.
  • May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
  • May be exposed to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, etc.
  • May have periods of constant interruptions.
  • Required to travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of working alone.

* Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
