The MRI Tech is responsible for daily modality operations. They perform Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) according to established protocols and work under the direction of the Radiologist and other physicians. They are also expected to contribute to the training and onboarding of new employees and assist in supervision of MRI students.
Essential Job Functions- Completes assigned tasks in a time frame appropriate for the situation; demonstrates flexibility to fluctuation in workload.
- Selects and operates the magnetic resonance system, surface coils, physiologic gating devices, and associated equipment to achieve desired results.
- Applies principles of magnetic resonance safety to minimize risk to patient, self, and others.
- Positions the patient on the MRI scanning cradle to obtain the desired anatomic position; inputs patient information and selects scan parameters; scans patients according to established protocol and physician request; performs IV injections and has knowledge of use and care of existing IVs; administers magnetic contrast agents specific to procedure; manipulates images with available computer functions to optimally visualize anatomy; performs quality assurance tests as specified by department protocol;
maintains clinical competency as required. - Demonstrates direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient related information, explaining procedures, preparing patient history and consent where applicable, screening for metal safety, ensuring comfort, privacy, and safety, monitoring patient condition and equipment, and reporting changes to radiology staff.
- Participates in the education/instruction of students and the orientation of new staff.
- Participates in performance improvement projects and assists the department in audits.
- Selects appropriate pulse sequences in line with established protocols and data acquisition parameters.
- Maintains controlled access to the magnet room and designated zones (Zone 2, 3 and
4). - Quality control duties and collaboration with other modalities and departments.
- Oversees quality control and maintenance activities as needed.

Licensing / Certification- MRI Registry from an accredited organization (ARRT) or ARMRIT (required)
- State licensure (preferred, unless required by the state where the job is performed)
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for some locations; preferred at hire or prior to independent patient care elsewhere)
OR
- Certification and Registration with ARRT in Diagnostic Radiology (required), Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), ARRT(S), Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMTCB)
- Advanced MRI Registry (MR) preferred or must obtain within two years
- State licensure (preferred, unless required by the state where the job is performed)
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (preferred at hire; required prior to independent patient care at some locations)
Associate's from an ARRT accredited institute (preferred)
Work Experience1 year of experience in MRI department in hospital setting (preferred)
Training- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred)
