TOOL ROOM MANAGER NEEDED - LORAIN, OHIO
A Leading Automotive Supplier near Lorain, Ohio needs a Tool Room Manager. Previous Tool Room Management Experience in an Automotive Manufacturing Plant is Required. Metal Stamping Expertise is Required. A Journeyman's Card is Preferred. This is a Full Time, Permanent, Direct Hire Position offering Competitive Compensation, Bonus Potential, Good Benefits, Paid Holidays and Paid Vacation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This Tool Room Manager oversees the design, maintenance and repair of Progressive and Transfer Metal Stamping Dies. This role maximizes press uptime, directs toolmakers and machinists, and controls tooling budgets. Will be play a key role in driving plant-wide production efficiency, quality standards, and continuous improvement initiatives
Tooling Operations: Lead the daily operations of the tool room, assigning tasks to toolmakers, CNC machinists, and apprentices to support stamping production schedules.
Die Maintenance & Repair: Oversee the tear-down, troubleshooting, and repair of transfer and progressive metal stamping dies.
Preventive Maintenance (PM): Develop, execute, and monitor preventative and predictive maintenance programs to minimize downtime, extend tool life, and reduce changeover scrap.
Project Management: Manage in-house tool builds and coordinate with outside vendors for new tooling or complex repairs, including negotiating prices and assessing risk.
Process Improvement: Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as Operational Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) to implement cost-saving and efficiency-improving measures.
Team Leadership: Hire, train, coach, and mentor tool room personnel, ensuring a safe and compliant work environment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Experience: Typically requires 7-10+ years of progressive experience in the automotive or custom metal stamping industry.
Technical Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of stamping press setups, tool & die design, and materials (such as carbides).
Leadership: Proven experience managing cross-functional teams, prioritizing shop workloads, and controlling department overtime and expenses.
Compliance: Strong familiarity with manufacturing quality management standards (e.g., IATF 16949).
Software / Tools: Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, blueprint reading, and tool tracking/inventory management systems
