The Mercury Lorain Police Officer enforces established safety and security policies and supports a positive, customer‑friendly service‑oriented approach. This role follows International Association of Hospital Safety and Security Management (IAHSS) guidelines and best practices.
Summary of EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Protect patients, visitors, and employees by providing escorts, patrolling, and eliminating safety hazards.
- Deterrence of vandalism, theft, and property abuse through routine patrols of hospital property, parking lots, and decks.
- Enforce hospital policies such as parking regulations, visitation policies, and tobacco‑free/smoking policy.
- Monitor activity on closed‑circuit television for escalating situations that require security involvement.
- Intervene in patient, visitor, and/or staff confrontations as appropriate.
- Report duties to dispatcher and complete documentation of incidents.
- Demonstrate understanding of emergency procedures, alarm response, evacuation, and internal and external disaster plans.
- Respond to emergency situations and hospital alarms as designated.
- Complete mandatory education and training to maintain competencies and requirements.
- Maintain applicable certifications and licenses, including IAHSS Basic Training within 90 days of hire.
- Remain on assigned post and keep post and police vehicles clean, neat, and free of non‑work material.
- Adhere to policies on attendance, punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, , and safety.
- Present oneself in a professional manner at all times when on duty.
- Accept assignments and duties as directed by Police Department Management.
- Inspire, motivate, and model service‑oriented and positive customer service behaviors.
- Foster team collaboration and support interdisciplinary work teams and community partners.
- Demonstrate self‑governance and promote the same in others.
- Support an environment that fosters professional and personal growth.
- Participate in scheduled emergency management exercises and drills.
- Promote stewardship of resources while maintaining or improving quality of service.
- Communicate goals, plans, and actions, encouraging employee feedback and ownership.
- Investigate, research, and analyze data to assess impact on organization‑wide or interdepartmental operations.
- Complete internal investigative reports timely with accurate information and correct grammar and spelling.
- Adhere to and enforce Police Department policies and procedures; support performance improvement processes.
- Participate in safety rounds and conduct monthly safety inspections/security‑related equipment checks.
- Participate in monthly fire safety management drills and perform additional duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma required.
- Current Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) Certificate of completion.
- Associate and/or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- IAHSS Basic Training and Certification for Healthcare Security Officer within one year of hiring.
- Minimum 1–2 years of law enforcement, criminal justice, or military training preferred.
- Valid Ohio driver’s license.
- Qualify with duty weapons as directed to meet state and/or departmental requirements.
- Qualify with an ECD per Police Department policy and procedure.
- Complete AED‑CPR training as per Police Department policy and procedure.
- Comply with Police Department requirements related to protective equipment, body cameras, and body armor.
- Familiar with LEADS and NCIC computer functions and request procedures.
- Maintain current OPOTA status and complete mandatory refresher and additional classes.
- Qualify with firearm as scheduled by department.
