Civil​/Structural Engineer

Job Summary

Nightwing is seeking a highly motivated and experienced civil engineer with a structural focus to join our team in the Springfield, VA area. The role involves applying building engineering and construction experience to support our customer’s challenging missions and developing detailed solutions through research, collaboration, testing, and guiding design decisions with modeling and calculations.

The civil engineer will:

• Perform structural analyses and generate detailed designs across materials such as steel, concrete, wood, and composites.
• Collaborate closely with mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering professionals to produce effective solutions.
• Write test plans, coordinate and execute testing, and analyze results.
• Apply experience with a variety of design codes, construction practices, and materials ranging from steel to soil.
• Support project managers and team leaders in coordinating internal and external resources and fostering customer relationships through effective communication.
• Convey technical solutions to customers and field teams.
• Research and propose enhancements to components and processes, and independently seek opportunities to improve existing processes.
• Review documents and calculations prepared by others; mentor other engineers in best design and construction practices.
• Perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds for bench‑top and representative environment evaluations.
• Travel to temporary assignments outside the greater Washington DC Metropolitan area, expected travel less than 10% of the time.

• Eligible and willing to obtain a TS/SCI clearance with CI polygraph. Clearance sponsorship is provided.
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related discipline from an EAC/ABET‑accredited program.
• Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and able to gain registration as a professional engineer (PE) and Structural Engineer (SE).
• Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant engineering experience, or a minimum of six (6) years with a master’s degree in civil engineering with a structural focus.
• Strong background in structural analysis, design codes, materials testing, and construction practices.
• Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software;
  Autodesk and Solid Works platforms preferred.
• Experience with structural design and analysis software such as RAM, Risa, Tekla Sky Civ, and IDEA Stati
  
  CA.
• Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and interpreting soil mechanics test results.
• Design experience with reinforced concrete and steel.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills; ability to work in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment.

• Master’s degree in civil engineering or related discipline.
• Professional Civil and Structural Engineer (PE and SE) licensure.
• 8 to 10 years of professional structural design experience.
• Underground construction experience.
• Experience working with wood and composite materials.
• Project management training and experience.
• Experience with research and development projects related to buildings or tooling.
• Experience with international building codes.
