As a trainee you will assist passengers, manage service disruptions with calm and professionalism, conduct safety checks, and support the Conductor in overseeing onboard operations and staff. Strong communication skills and independent thinking are essential, as you will interact with crew members, dispatchers, and customers in real time.
Trainees may be assigned to on‑corridor or off‑corridor locations. On‑corridor duties are on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and include rail yard work, operating track switches, connecting rail cars, and inspecting equipment. Off‑corridor duties support long‑distance and regional routes and involve similar physical activities in varied environments. All positions are physically demanding and require alertness to safety instructions in yards, platforms, and right‑of‑way areas.

New hires will attend a comprehensive 7–8 week training program in Wilmington, Delaware, that combines classroom instruction with fieldwork.
- Learn safety protocols, customer service techniques, and operational procedures.
- Transition to on‑the‑job training at the assigned crew base, applying knowledge in real‑world scenarios.
- Complete training satisfactorily to be placed on the extra board with variable shift work.
- Assist the Conductor with train movements, ensuring compliance with operating rules and safety requirements.
- Promote a safe environment by enforcing safety procedures, responding to emergencies, and assisting passengers during boarding and detraining.
- Perform yard operations, including moving, connecting, and inspecting rail cars and related equipment.
- Organize and sort checked baggage on long‑distance trains by destination.
- Deliver exceptional customer service through assistance, announcements, and management of passenger conduct.
- Collect and verify fares and revenue documentation per established tariffs.
- Prepare operational and service reports covering delays, incidents, and mechanical concerns.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with passengers, crew, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain knowledge of train operations, safety procedures, and troubleshooting practices.
- Represent Amtrak professionally, adhering to uniform and grooming standards.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Demonstrated responsibility and leadership in prior work experience.
- Two years of full‑time, verifiable work experience and/or college coursework.
- History of satisfactory attendance and adherence to safe work practices.
- Current and valid driver’s license.
- Residence within a two‑hour commute of the crew base.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and meet FRA standards for vision, color vision, and hearing as specified in 49 CFR 242.
- Experience leading or supporting others in a team setting.
- Customer service experience involving cash handling.
- Work history that demonstrates adaptability to varying schedules.
- Basic mechanical knowledge or equipment maintenance experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Hourly rate: $24.38 – $24.38 (subject to collective bargaining agreement adjustments).
