Position: Program Safety Officer (Operations Specialist 3/4)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Operations Specialist 3 or Operations Specialist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate. DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high‑rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR products.

DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on challenging national security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.

Detonator Production (DP) is seeking a highly qualified candidate to be considered for the Division Safety Officer position. This position will provide safety leadership to a Division comprised of six groups consisting of about 200 employees, ensuring timely and successful mission deliverables for the Nation's stockpile. The Safety Officer will provide direction in administering, implementing, and resolving performance, compliance, administrative, or technical programs and issues in direct support of operations functions.

Specialist 3 $ 85,900 - $139,900

The DP Safety Officer will provide effective leadership in upholding Laboratory SMPs (Safety Management Programs), implementation of new safety directives, and be a strong contributor to daily safety activities such as hazards analysis, procedure reviews, operational walk‑downs, programmatic maintenance, issues management actions related to safety improvements, coaching and mentoring of early‑career personnel on topics such as work execution, and being a main contributor to the DP Division WESST (Worker, Environmental, Safety, and Security Team).

Specialist 4 $ 104,100 - $172,200

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will contribute to a strong and compliant process for hosting contractors performing on‑site maintenance of programmatic equipment. DP is a highly operational organization performing daily operations in high explosives, chemical etching, packaging, shipping, and warehousing activities. As an Operations Specialist 4, you will apply your operational background in hazardous operations such as explosives safety (DOE‑STD‑1212) and chemical safety.

Additionally, the successful Safety Officer will work closely with facility organizations as the point of contact for the Division's life safety systems and emergency response readiness.
