What You Will Do
The LANL Emergency Response Group is searching for people to join a dynamic and diverse team of emergency responders where you will add your skills and expertise to strengthen our capabilities. This is an entry‑level position where you will work with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to respond to and mitigate hazardous materials emergencies involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials.
The Group’s primary mission is to support Laboratory operations through solving hazardous materials issues at Laboratory owned or leased nuclear and non-nuclear facilities. When not performing emergency response operations, you will participate in preparedness and training activities supporting LANL, local, State and Federal response partners.
EM‑RESP personnel may be called upon to support or serve on national emergency response programs responsible for responding to nuclear/radiological incidents, national and global security activities, and domestic civilian radiological assistance. Additional services we provide to the Laboratory and surrounding communities include providing hazardous materials training, technical assistance, and consultations, and community outreach and education activities.
The successful candidate must be highly self‑motivated, have a demonstrated track record of personal initiative, be results and performance‑oriented, and have a proven track record of effective communication and interpersonal skills.

MinimumJob Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in emergency response; e.g. fire, law enforcement, EMS, military.
- Experience in the use, maintenance, and upkeep of emergency response equipment and PPE.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment under stressful conditions (heat, humidity, cold, strenuous activity).
- Mechanical aptitude, experience, and a comfort level working under challenging and occasionally austere conditions.
This position requires an Associate’s degree in an emergency response/management field or STEM field and two years of related experience, or a combination of education and experience directly related to job duties.
Desired Qualifications- Certification as a Hazmat Technician pursuant to 29 CFR , desirable.
- Experience using various types of PPE, including but not limited to fire fighter turnout gear and HAZMAT Level A & B suits with SCBA.
- Formal training in ICC and NIMS.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a New Mexico Class E driver’s license.
- Work experience in one or more of the following areas: chemistry, biology, industrial hygiene and safety, or radiation protection.
- Climbing ladders.
- Carrying 30+ pounds.
- Lifting 30+ pounds.
- Operating in a wide range of ambient temperatures.
- Operating in a wet or humid environment.
Working overtime or irregular schedule, rotating shift, domestic/foreign travel, operation of motor vehicles, Level A HAZMAT suit, Level B HAZMAT suit/anti‑C, SCBA.
Work LocationThe work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is one year.
