What You Will Do

The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Science Project Delivery Group (ES-SPD). ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program, that includes an internal standards document referencing IBC, IEBC, and other code standard documents, at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations.

ES acts as an internal design agency to LANL and as a customer’s representative and a building official for design produced by external design agencies. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory with a focus on non-nuclear facilities.

This position will be filled at either the Architect 1/2 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Architect 1/2 is equivalent to Intern Architect under the supervision of a senior architect. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

  • Your teams will provide architectural and engineering design services typical for all construction project phases: scoping, design, construction, commissioning and operation.
  • You will be expected to perform the following tasks:
  • Help develop documents that define the project such as requirements documents, scoping documents, conceptual designs and alternative studies
  • Produce design documents under supervision and with growing independence, including drawings, calculations, and specifications
  • Support the design process by coordinating deliverables, attending meetings and helping to resolve review comments
  • Take individual responsibility for meeting design schedules, managing costs, carrying out quality checks and supporting overall project delivery
  • Support construction activities, including design changes, request for information, inspections and occupancy approvals
  • Assist with project closeout tasks, including punch lists, as-builts, turnover and document filing
  • Work with the LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives such as LANL Building Official (LBO), fire marshal, electrical safety officer, etc. for identification of requirements, permitting, and issues resolution

Architect 2 ($85,900- $139,900)

This level expects an increased ability for independent production of design deliverables whilst still under the supervision of a senior architect. In addition to what was outlined in the Architect Level 1, at this level additional responsibilities will include:

  • Increased understanding of code requirements and how to apply them through code analysis
  • Provide architectural design for slightly larger and more complex projects independently
  • Research, evaluate and specify building products for facility modification applications
  • Resolve field-initiated design questions independently, responding to field conditions and adequately communicating solutions both verbally and through design change documents
