Position: Safety Training Specialist 3 (Learning Specialist 3)

What You Will Do

As a Learning Specialist 3, you will support Los Alamos National Laboratory's Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) training programs. You will collaborate with subject matter experts and program owners to design, develop, and deliver training in accordance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other regulatory and contractual requirements.

This role spans the full training lifecycle—from design and development through delivery and evaluation—to ensure quality and compliance. You will apply adult learning principles to create and deliver engaging classroom instruction. This position carries a substantial teaching load. Responsibilities include developing and instructing regulatory-driven safety courses related to hoisting and rigging (overhead crane), forklift, mechanical material handling, confined space, and/or fall protection

As a Learning Specialist 3, you are expected to bring deep, practical knowledge of safety-related work and serve as the primary owner of assigned training programs. You are accountable for maintaining technical accuracy, regulatory alignment, and overall program effectiveness, and for proactively identifying needed updates or improvements. This role may involve leading or mentoring others in support of program execution and may require work in a variety of operational environments.

Job Duties

  • Make safety and security an integral part of every task, maintaining required training and stopping work when conditions are unsafe or insecure.
  • Contribute to organizational goals and objectives.
  • Partner with subject matter experts and program owners to ensure training programs meet Laboratory needs and comply with regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Interpret and apply regulations and policies to maintain training compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain procedures, forms, templates, rosters, and lesson plans.
  • Create and maintain classroom materials that are high quality and compliant.
  • Conduct classroom and hands-on instruction.
  • Support knowledge preservation, capture, and transfer initiatives as needed.
  • Promote a respectful and inclusive work environment.
  • Support grantee, vendor, and SME instructors by coordinating logistics, assisting during delivery, and ensuring consistency with Laboratory training standards and requirements.
  • Represent the training program before stakeholders and regulators.
  • Provide expert guidance in interpreting regulations and policies to ensure compliance.
  • Mentor, coach, and train other staff within the field.
  • May participate in: assessments, incident investigations, root cause analyses, data analysis, project management, or critiques.
  • May participate in or lead special/emergent projects.
  • Requires hands-on application of the work in varying and different operational environments. Requires hands-on application of work across diverse and varying operational environments.
  • May act as Subject Matter Expert.

What You Need

Minimum

Job Requirements:

  • Field and/or instructional experience related to hoisting and rigging (overhead crane), material handling, forklift operations, confined space entry, and/or fall protection
    .
  • Knowledge of and experience working under OSHA, EPA, and DOT federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of Department of Energy (DOE) orders and Laboratory policies/procedures pertaining to training.
  • Demonstrated skill with interpersonal, written, and verbal communications.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of common computer-based applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) and the use of computer-based applications for course development (e.g., Captivate, Articulate, etc.).
  • Knowledge of learning theory and performance-based training techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and identify requirements as they pertain to the position.
  • Working knowledge of the applicable document control and records management processes.

Training/

Certifications:

Within 3 months of hire, completion of Los Alamos National Laboratory's Training Staff Qualification Program.

Education/

Experience:

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
