This position requires licenses from NM PED. Fees will be paid by the employee via credit or debit card: $50.00 if both licenses are applied for together, or $100.00 if applied for separately. Los Alamos Public Schools Human Resources will provide application materials.
$19.13 Hourly Rate
1.00 FTE, 7 hour day, 35 hour week.

Summary
Under supervision of a special education teacher, district behavior specialist, speech pathologist, physical therapist, nurse and other related service providers, provide assistance to students aged 6-22 with disabilities requiring highly specialized training or personal care beyond that of age peers (e.g., Braille, applied behavior analysis, intensive communication interventions, CPI, diaper changes, catheterization, tube feeding, transfers, etc.).
Essential Functions
- Provide significant individual interventions or personal care beyond that required of age‑peers (e.g., intensive interventions, diaper changes, transfers, equipment use).
- Participate in ongoing specialized training from relevant professionals to ensure student safety.
- Provide medically related services such as catheterization, tube feeding, suctioning, seizure management with training from the school nurse.
- Ensure students’ medical, hygiene, and safety needs are met in school and community settings.
- Assist in preparing materials for instructors; set up demonstrations, equipment, and promote a positive learning environment.
- Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs; monitor student activity and report progress on functional and adaptive goals.
- Oversee classroom activities in the absence of an instructor and during recess, lunch, and special events; assist in maintaining disciplinary procedures.
- Accompany students during school hours as required; contact appropriate staff to report emergencies or unusual situations.
- Implement and monitor behavioral intervention plans assigned to individual students to manage challenging behavior.
- Develop, instruct, and monitor daily living skills for assigned students (e.g., hygiene items, eating utensils, dressing).
- Respond to routine inquiries from students and parents; refer complex issues to instructors or medical staff.
- Perform custodial duties in the classroom to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Operate office equipment including computer, copier, fax.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures for the work area.
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications – Knowledge
Operations and activities of a special education program; general goals and purpose of special education; student instructional methods; assessment techniques; basic behavioral and medical conditions; theories of early childhood development; academic subject matter; physical and learning assistance techniques; modern office and classroom practices; behavior management strategies; record keeping;
English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation; federal, state, local codes and regulations.
Ability to
Apply common sense to carry out detailed instruction; maintain composure during challenging behavior; handle problems with few variables in standardized situations; develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community; communicate clearly in oral and written form; assist children and adolescents with learning; present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings; perform basic math operations; comply with district and Board policies.
Education and Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that provides required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Education

Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.
Experience
:
Demonstrated ability to apply training.
License or Certificate
:
Valid New Mexico driver’s license; ability to obtain mandated Educational Assistant and Substitute Teacher licenses as required.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Must meet physical demands such as sitting, walking, standing, transferring students, operating transfer equipment; possess strength, agility, stamina to ensure safety of students who may engage in self‑injury, aggression, climbing, or running away. Noise level moderate, occasional movement of mechanical parts. Must have close and distance vision.
