This position requires a New Mexico Public Educational Department (NM PED) license. Applicants will pay fees: $50.00 if both licenses are applied for in the same online application, or $100.00 if they are applied for separately. Human Resources will provide licensure information.

Hourly Rate: $19.13

FTE: 1.00, 7‑hour day, 35‑hour week

Contract: August 4, 2026 to May 28, 2027

Summary

Under the supervision of special education staff, provide assistance to students aged 6‑22 with disabilities requiring highly specialized training (e.g., Braille, Applied Behavior Analysis, intensive communication interventions) or personal care beyond that required by age peers.

Essential Functions
  • Provide individual interventions or personal care beyond that required by same age peers, including specialized training and personal hygiene interventions.
  • Participate in ongoing specialized training to ensure student safety.
  • Provide medically related services such as catheterization, tube feeding, suctioning, seizure management.
  • Ensure students’ medical, hygiene, and safety needs are met in school and community settings.
  • Assist in preparation of materials for special education instructors and promote a positive learning environment.
  • Assist in development of an Individualized Education Program and monitor progress.
  • Oversee classroom activities in absence of instructor and maintain disciplinary procedures.
  • Accompany students during school hours and report emergencies.
  • Implement and monitor behavioral intervention plans.
  • Develop, instruct, and monitor daily living skills for assigned students.
  • Respond to inquiries from students and parents and refer complex issues to professionals.
  • Perform custodial duties to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Operate office equipment such as computer, copier, fax.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of special education program operations, services, and activities; general goals; student instructional methods; assessment techniques; basic behavioral and medical conditions; early childhood development theories; academic subject principles; physical and learning assistance methods; office and classroom practices; behavior management; record-keeping;
    English usage; federal, state, and local codes.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out written or oral instruction; maintain composure during challenging behavior; handle problems with concrete variables in standardized situations; develop effective relationships; communicate clearly; assist students in all learning aspects; present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings; perform basic math; perform duties in accordance with District & Board policies.
Education and Experience

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Demonstrated ability to apply training.

License or Certificate
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain mandated Educational Assistant and Substitute Teacher licenses as required.

The physical demands are similar to those required for a person to successfully perform job functions. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

Regularly sit, walk, stand; ability to transfer adult students; physical strength and stamina to ensure safety during challenging behaviors.
