System Electrical Engineer

What You Will Do

The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations.

As well as supporting existing systems, modifications and customers occupying the facilities.

As a System Electrical Engineer you will support the Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) portfolio consisting of nuclear, accelerator and non-nuclear facilities, spanning half of the laboratory's footprint. You will directly support facilities with a direct impact on LANL's stockpile stewardship mission. Daily tasks include but are not limited to response to emerging facility issues, configuration management including facility technical baseline management, electrical/pressure safety support, reviewing designs for facility modification and providing system health reporting.

Note:

This position will be filled at either the System Engineer 1/ System Engineer 2 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

• System Electrical Engineer with Engineering Services serves as the owner's representative for engineering for assigned facilities. Interface with design teams, maintenance, and operations, shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing portfolio. • Develop skills to independently run all engineering facets of a project from scoping to construction to sustainment
• Foster relationships with project stakeholders and customers as a representative of Engineering Services
• Facilitate technical growth of the engineering team

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Ability to prepare calculations, apply engineering methods, and apply technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering challenges
• Ability to support timely and collaborative construction execution. This includes timely review of submittals, requests for information (RFIs), design changes, non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation and produce accurate as-built documents
• Basic knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards

Additional Job Requirements for System Electrical Engineer Level 2:

• Demonstrated design experience in commercial and/or government sectors
• Knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination
• Ability to collaboratively problem solve, show commitment, and function well in a team environment
• Thorough knowledge of engineering principles
• Demonstrated experience in the development of engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, test and inspection plans (TIPs), and statements of special inspection (SSIs)

Education/Experience at Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Education/Experience at Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:

• Electrical engineering degree and/or experience with facility electrical systems is strongly preferred
• Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
• Design or operations experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations
• Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes
• Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
