What You Will Do
The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). The ES Groups implement the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program to support systems, structures, and components for both new installations and existing facilities, while also serving customers occupying the facilities.
As a System Electrical Engineer you will support the Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) portfolio, which spans half of the laboratory's footprint and directly impacts LANL’s stockpile stewardship mission. Your daily duties will include responding to emerging facility issues; managing configuration and technical baselines; providing electrical and pressure safety support; reviewing designs for facility modification; and reporting on system health.
The position will be filled at the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on your skills and experience. If hired at the higher level, additional responsibilities will be assigned as outlined below.
System Electrical Engineer Level 3As a Level 3 System Engineer with Engineering Services, you will act as the owner's representative for engineering on your assigned facilities. You will interface with design teams, maintenance, and operations to shape LANL’s facilities and infrastructure to meet evolving needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead Electrical Safety Officer (ESO): conduct arc‑flash calculations and maintain thorough knowledge of NFPA 70E.
- Manage and maintain the technical baseline of facility equipment; ensure configuration is managed using a risk‑based graded approach.
- Follow the LANL COE program and relevant LANL Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), LANL Administrative Procedures (APS), and Master Specifications.
- Review design outputs for impacts on the technical baseline and master equipment lists; control and maintain the master equipment list (MEL) for assigned facilities.
- Assist in defining maintenance requirements and track system performance; support preventative maintenance scheduling.
- Perform regular facility system walkdowns and facility health reports.
- Coordinate with the Pressure Safety Officer (PSO) on pressure safety systems.
- Mentor lower‑level System Engineers and serve as a technical interface for existing facility systems and components.
- Provide expert knowledge of assigned facilities and review IWDs.
Competitive with the Level 3 duties, Level 4 requires additional expertise in nuclear facility engineering, and includes:
- Extensive knowledge of nuclear facility engineering processes, maintenance techniques, work planning and control, quality, safety basis, and other nuclear safety programs.
- Experience with industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes and standards relevant to nuclear facility engineering.
- Expert understanding of nuclear engineering principles, guidelines, and administrative practices.
- Preparation and review of technical reports and studies for establishing technical baselines of new and existing structural systems.
- Definition and collection of metrics on usage, process, safety, and other performance parameters for structures, systems, or components.
- Definition and development of design or analysis tasks; creation of design concepts, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections, incorporating applicable nuclear safety requirements.
- Evaluation and trending of system health.
- Coordination with other engineering disciplines and customers as the electrical SME.
- Mentorship of engineering interns and other engineers.
