What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Environmental Professional 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Environmental Professional 2 ($85,900 - $139,900)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution with the brightest minds in the world and unparalleled technology and equipment. The Environmental Protection and Compliance Division, Waste Management Programs Group (EPC-WMP), is seeking a trustworthy, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable Environmental Professional to provide support to LANL’s Compliance Technical Assist Process (CTAP) and waste generator compliance program.
You will collaborate with Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) Permitting/Compliance team members to provide guidance and consulting to LANL waste generating organizations to support hazardous waste compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
You will work closely with other RCRA compliance Subject Matter Experts to support LANL’s solid and hazardous waste compliance programs and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA); conduct site visits to ensure compliance with RCRA permitted unit requirements; collect and report on compliance and performance data; prepare and submit required hazardous waste related reports; and support annual New Mexico Environment Department-Hazardous Waste Bureau inspections.
This position is expected to attract individuals with a general knowledge of hazardous and solid waste requirements. This position will be combination of field activity and office work.
Environmental Professional 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:
The selected candidate may interpret and implement relevant federal, state and local environmental regulations and executive orders, including regulatory agreements. Provide leadership to Environmental Professionals Level 1-2. Can participate in an Integrated Project Team representing environmental requirements that are different from their area of expertise. Oversee and develop processes necessary for ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory requirements (i.e., deliverables tracking and develop deliverables preparation).
Analyze and trend audit results to identify systemic issues, prioritize areas for environmental compliance improvement, and develop targeted, effective solutions and communication strategies to drive awareness and corrective action across stakeholder groups.

Job Requirements:
- Understanding of environmental regulations, with an emphasis on RCRA waste management and compliance.
- Experience drafting technical reports, procedures, and in conducting procedure reviews.
- The ability to work successfully as part of a team and achieve team objectives and the ability to deal with difficult deadlines and short time frames.
- Ability and experience working independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing team-based environment.
- Experience and skill in communicating (both written and verbal) in a clear concise manner to superiors, peers, customers, and other personnel.
Additional Job Requirements for Environmental Professional 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Experience Interfacing with management, the Department of Energy, subcontractors, state and/or federal subject matter experts, stakeholders, the public, and regulators.
- Proven customer service orientation and consultation skills sufficient to partner with client organizations to implement sound environmental practices.
- Advanced knowledge of permit reviews.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience with environmental regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Experience Interpreting and implementing relevant federal, state and/or local environmental, occupational health, legislation, regulations and executive orders, including regulatory agreements.
- Experience analyzing processes and practices based upon advanced-level environmental science expertise and recommending sound environmental practices to upper management for distribution to programs, directorates and institution-wide.
- Experience conducting environmental analyses and audits of operations and facilities to identify potential environmental issues and negotiates and/or consults with and recommending resolutions to customers.
- Experience preparing and presenting environmental white papers and/or assigned special project reports.
- Demonstrated experience ensuring environmental protection results, materials, processes, and deliverables meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
