Position Summary:The Fire Protection Specialist is responsible for providing institutional technical support for N3B's nuclear and non-nuclear facilities Fire Protection Program. Provides subject matter expertise in fire protection systems design, construction and maintenance.
MajorDuties & Responsibilities:
Include, but are not limited to:
- Provides technical fire protection support to N3B facility management and programmatic organizations.
- Provides fire protection related plans review and comment for corrective and construction projects.
- Provides fire protection related Work Package review and comment for corrective and construction projects.
- Oversees the commissioning, operations, and periodic inspection, testing and maintenance of N3B fire protection and life safety systems and equipment.
- Provides input on N3B equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes.
- Provides technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Level 4: A High School Diploma or GED and seven (7) years of related experience.
- Level 5: A High School Diploma or GED and ten (10) years of related experience and advanced certification in assigned area required (recent certification acceptable).
- Experience working as a qualified OJE (On the Job Evaluator) for training new Craft personnel on fire alarm systems inspection, testing, maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly-protected (HPR), such as FM Global datasheets, or similar.
- Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to N3B facilities and operations.
- Knowledge of DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, N3B Conduction of Maintenance, N3B Conduct of Operations, N3B Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principles, N3B Fire Protection Program.
- Advanced knowledge of nuclear facility Conduct of Maintenance expectations and principles.
- Subject Matter Expert level familiarity with NFPA 72 (National Fire Protection Association) Fire Alarm Code inspection, testing and maintenance requirements.
- Advanced level familiarity with NFPA 25, Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems.
- Proven leadership in teaching and mentoring more junior staff.
- Past experience performing inspection, testing and maintenance on fire protection systems for nuclear facilities, including associated qualification/certifications.
- Experience investigating fire protection systems and equipment issues and deficiencies and proposing corrective actions as needed, and communicating this information to Engineering.
- Experience supporting implementation of a nuclear facility Fire Protection Program.
- Experience implementing fire protection impairment program requirements per NFPA 25 and NFPA 72.
- Experience performing detailed technical reviews of work packages, preventive maintenance instructions (PMIs), facility design documents including designs, plans, submittals, project specifications and similar documents and provides effective, actionable comments.
- Experience in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and/or craft personnel.
- Experience in design or plans review of fire protection and life safety features of building and of fire protection systems, or experience in documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processes.
- Experience managing fire protection systems and equipment spare parts inventory.

Contacts involve planning and preparation of communications, require skill, tact, persuasion and/or negotiation to accomplish the objectives of the communications.

IMPACT:LEVEL 4: Errors are very difficult to detect and would normally require significant expenditures to resolve.
LEVEL 5: Errors and problems are unusual and unprecedented, impact of error is extremely high and may affect entire operations and safety.
