Position: Facility Electrical System Engineer 2/3

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Facility Electrical System Engineer. ES Division applies capabilities to enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Within ES, the Science and Technology Operations (STO) Engineering Group is a multi-disciplinary organization consisting of collaborative System and Modification Engineering Teams.

Collectively, these teams enable the STO Facility Operations Directorate (FOD) mission across nearly three million square feet of mixed-use office, laboratory, research, and production space. With over one hundred and fifty facilities in 12 Technical Areas, STO mission work spans the majority of Laboratory Directorates. This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)

The successful Engineer 2 candidate will perform the following (list is not all‑inclusive):

  • Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management
  • Assess, maintain, and upgrade facility power distribution systems
  • Lead the development and review of electrical engineering and designs for new and replacement equipment
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost
  • Qualify as Electrical Safety Officer and support work planning, hazard control, and abnormal event responses and investigation
Engineer 3 ($114,700 - $191,200)

Additional responsibilities at the Engineer 3 Level:

  • Evaluate complex electrical challenges, identify risks, and develop creative solutions
  • Provide insights on electrical safety, power quality, system protection, and reliability improvements
  • Lead technical discussions, mentor junior engineers, and drive process improvements
  • Manage long-term operational and strategic planning for facility reinvestment and asset management
What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements Technical Expertise
  • Combined experience related to the engineering, calculations, and design of facility electrical system, structures and components such as switch gear, switchboards, MCCs, motor starters/VFDs, Small UPS, panel boards, feeders, branch circuits, and short circuit analysis
  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering principles, design guides and relevant standards
Codes, Standards, and Installation Experience
  • Experience in system and equipment installation and maintenance in accordance with National Codes and Standards such as IBC, IEC, IEEE, NEC, and NFPA
Project Management and Engineering Practices
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning, design change control and coordination
  • Knowledge of basic project engineering practices
Communication Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Progressive combined experience related to the design, installation, and maintenance of facility electrical system, structures and components
  • In‑depth knowledge of integrated systems engineering, principles, design guides and appropriate standards
Problem‑Solving and Design Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement interdisciplinary design solutions to complex facility and equipment installations
  • Demonstrated ability to apply project engineering practices
Self‑Management and Collaboration
  • Demonstrated ability for self‑directed work, planning, and prioritization
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi‑disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior personnel
