Position: Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professional 3 OR 4

What You Will Do

The position will be filled at Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 3 or 4 level depending on the candidate’s skills. Reporting to the OSH Industrial Safety and Hygiene Safety Leader, the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional develops, recommends, and implements programs and procedures related to the evaluation and control of potential health and safety hazards.

Provides integrated Environment, Safety, and Health support across a wide range of laboratory, research, and industrial operations and offers daily program support to programmatic and facility organizations to ensure worker protection and compliance with Laboratory ISH requirements.

Requires close collaboration with the workforce to solve complex IH/safety problems using professional concepts and Laboratory objectives. The role requires the application of advanced technical knowledge and independent problem solving.

IH&S Professional 3 Responsibilities
  • Apply advanced safety principles to evaluate hazards and exposures.
  • Perform complex analysis of work activities, hazards, and data.
  • Design and implement exposure assessment and/or hazard evaluation strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance to line organizations.
  • Support program implementation and continuous improvement efforts.
Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 4 Responsibilities
  • Develop, recommend, and implement IH and/or safety programs and strategies across the Laboratory.
  • Lead complex evaluations and control strategies for high‑risk operations.
  • Provide expert interpretation of regulations and standards across multiple safety disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development of new methods, techniques, and program improvements.
  • Collaborate across organizations to resolve complex challenges requiring in‑depth analysis.
  • Influence program direction and support mission‑critical decisions.
Minimum

Job Requirements (both levels)
  • Strong knowledge and experience implementing industrial hygiene and/or safety risk assessments and corrective actions.
  • Experience identifying, applying, and interpreting federal codes, standards, and regulations (DOE, OSHA) across multiple safety program areas.
  • Experience conducting qualitative and/or quantitative exposure or hazard assessments, including use of relevant tools and instrumentation.
  • Ability to analyze hazards/exposures and implement appropriate controls using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Strong communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” clearance.
Additional

Job Requirements for IH&S Professional 4
  • Expert‑level knowledge and experience implementing industrial hygiene and/or safety risk assessments and corrective actions.
  • Expert‑level experience interpreting and applying regulations across multiple disciplines (e.g., ventilation, chemical safety, pressure safety, non‑ionizing radiation, forklift safety, oxygen deficiency, confined space, fall protection, electrical safety, medical surveillance, hearing conservation).
  • Expert‑level knowledge of exposure assessment and/or hazard evaluation methodologies.
  • Expert‑level ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve highly complex ESH problems and contribute to program development.
Desired Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of DOE and regulatory requirements in a research environment.
  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, and activities.
  • Experience with IH and/or safety data collection and analysis tools.
  • Advanced degree in industrial hygiene, safety, or related field.
  • Professional certifications such as CIH, CSP, or similar.
  • Active DOE clearance.
Education/Experience

IH&S Professional 3:
Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.

IH&S Professional 4:
Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline and a minimum of 12 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.
