What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO) and Design Engineering (PFE-DE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking a Structural Engineer.
- Produce designs that renovate rooms, modify buildings and structural members, and develop new structures within and around the plutonium facility.
- Install equipment on housekeeping pads or skids using post-installed anchors.
- Design crane girders and crane support structures, canopies, equipment support stands, piping/conduit supports, wall/floor/ceiling penetrations, and concrete slabs.
- Support senior engineers and team settings to complete full-system design solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership (for level
2).
Job Requirements
- Knowledge of structural engineering systems and calculations for non‑reactor facilities, and application of engineering methods and computer‑aided engineering tools.
- Structural analysis experience in SAP 2000, GT STRUDL, RISA, STAAD, or equivalent.
- Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods.
- Knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies and extensive knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides.
Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2
- Knowledge of DOE codes and standards including IBC, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, and DOE‑STD 1020.
- Knowledge of engineering principles, procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
- Knowledge of project and process engineering practices.
Lower level:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 2 years of practical work experience. Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
Higher level:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desirable. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of DOE standards applicable to structural design implementation.
- Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of Revit software and/or Building Information Modeling.
- Current registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
- General Physical Mobility: standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending.
- Specific Physical Mobility: use of both hands, arms, legs, feet; carrying/lifting up to 20 pounds.
- Work environments include noisy areas, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, machinery with moving parts, and overtime or irregular schedules.

Work ScheduleThis position may require 24/7 coverage, including shift, weekend, or irregular schedules. Shift differentials may apply.
ClearancePosition requires a Q clearance; only U.S. citizens are eligible, except in extremely rare circumstances.
