Position: Science/Engineering Program Manager 4/5

What You Will Do

Join our team! The Nuclear Materials and TRU Waste Shipping (NPI-7) group is seeking qualified candidates for a Science/Engineering Program Manager to support our mission objectives.

The selected candidate will integrate across TA‑55 programmatic operations and associated nuclear materials and waste management organizations to ensure the safe, secure, efficient, and compliant movement of fissile, radioactive, and hazardous materials from point of origin through final disposition and support modernization of packaging systems and accountability interfaces.

Responsibilities Science/Engineering Program Manager 4
  • Lead defined elements of PF‑4 nuclear materials logistics, TRU waste shipping, or WIPP campaign support activities for internal and external customers.
  • Manage assigned projects supporting packaging, characterization, certification, and shipment readiness (DOE/NNSA/Contractor).
  • Develop and maintain schedules, cost tracking, and milestone execution within defined scope.
  • Support coordination between PF‑4 operations, TRU waste generator sites, and packaging/shipping organizations and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to compliance execution with DOE Orders, NMC&A requirements, and DOT shipping regulations.
  • Participate in cross‑functional LANL and DOE/NNSA working groups.
Science/Engineering Program Manager 5
  • Provide enterprise‑level leadership for PF‑4 nuclear materials logistics, TRU waste shipping, and WIPP disposition strategy for internal and external customers.
  • Serve as Laboratory authority and primary interface for DOE/NNSA on nuclear materials movement and TRU waste disposal strategy.
  • Own integrated portfolio strategy across PF‑4 operations, LANL waste streams, and WIPP shipping campaigns.
  • Establish and manage portfolio‑level baselines, priorities, and funding alignment ($25‑$50 M+ annual scope or greater).
  • Lead integration across PF‑4 operations, LANL nuclear material control organizations, DOE laboratories, and WIPP interfaces.
  • Drive modernization of nuclear materials accountability systems, packaging certification processes, and transportation infrastructure.
  • Resolve high‑impact operational, regulatory, and programmatic issues affecting PF‑4 material flows and TRU waste disposition.
What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Program Management:
    Advanced knowledge of technical program/project management including scope, schedule, cost, risk, baseline development, and change control in complex nuclear or hazardous materials environments.
  • Communication:
    Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to interface across PF‑4 operations, LANL organizations, DOE/NNSA program offices, and external partners.
  • Execution & Integration:
    Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver complex projects in regulated nuclear materials and waste shipping environments.

Job Requirements for Science/Engineering Program Manager 5
  • Primary LANL interface to DOE/NNSA Federal Program Managers, national working groups, and inter‑laboratory governance bodies.
  • Technical Expertise:
    Knowledge of nuclear materials management, PF‑4‑related material movements, TRU waste characterization, packaging, transportation safety, and regulatory compliance frameworks including DOE Orders, NMC&A requirements, and DOT 49 CFR regulations.
Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering related field from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience for Level 4, or 15 years of directly related experience for Level 5. An advanced degree is typically expected at either level.

• DOE Order 426.2A requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science or technology, 2 years of job‑related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with external nuclear materials operations and facility material movement interfaces (DOE/NNSA).
  • Experience with PF‑4 nuclear materials operations and/or plutonium facility material movement interfaces.
  • Experience supporting TRU waste shipping campaigns to WIPP or similar DOE disposal facilities.
